In this tutorial you’ll learn how to edit HTML in WordPress so you can modify themes with whatever customizations you like. Let’s go!
In WordPress, the HTML is in PHP Files
You might be setting out to make some changes to a theme for the first time, and you might also know that you need to learn how to edit HTML code in WordPress.
However, the first hurdle you may run into is that if you’re looking for the .html files that hold that code, you’re not going to find any in a WordPress theme.
That’s because in a WordPress theme all HTML is contained within .php files instead.
HTML markup buried in PHP code
PHP is the code that makes WordPress sites “dynamic”, i.e. enabling them change their content on the fly when posts are added or changed, as opposed to being “static", where content stays the same unless manual file editing is done.
Most of the .php files in a WordPress theme contain some of that dynamic PHP code, mixed in with regular HTML code. In short, they are just like regular HTML files, but with some little PHP snippets responsible for making your site dynamic.
So even though you won’t see any .html files, there’s plenty of HTML code to be found within a theme’s .php files.

How to Edit HTML in the WordPress In-Built Theme Editor
So now you know you need to edit HTML in a theme’s PHP files, but the next question is: how do you actually do it?
The easiest way is through the theme code editor that comes built into WordPress.
To access it go to Appearance> Editor in the admin area’s left sidebar.
Once there, on the right you’ll see a list of all the files the currently active theme contains. Click any one and it will open in the editing area.
You can now go ahead make your changes in the editing area, then click the Update File button when you’re done. This will immediately make changes to the live site, so be certain you haven’t made any errors before you save.
Note: in some sites the theme editor may be disabled for security purposes. If you don’t see the editor, ask the person who administrates the site if it’s disabled. If so, you might prefer to use one of the other methods described in this tutorial.
Clear Your Caches
After editing WordPress theme HTML you might find that even when you refresh your site it looks the same. If this happens it’s probably a sign the old version of your site is being loaded in from either your browser cache, or potentially a caching plugin in WordPress. Be sure to clear both such caches and your changes should show up.
Download, Edit Offline, Upload
Instead of using the theme editor, another option is to manually download the file you want to change, edit its HTML offline, then re-upload it.
To do this you’ll need an FTP (file transfer protocol) client, such as FileZilla for example, and FTP connection details for your hosting. Most hosts will provide this information in a welcome email, and include details in their documentation on how to find your access credentials again later.
Once you use these credentials to connect to your host via FTP you can navigate to find your theme files.
First find the root directory containing your entire site. If you have just one site on your hosting it will likely be a directory named www or public_html. If you have multiple sites it will likely be a directory matching your domain name. There is no fixed rule on exactly which directory your site will be in though so if you get stuck you may need to ask your host for help.
Once in your site’s directory, locate the sub-directory named wp-content. Inside that is a directory named themes, and inside that you will find a directory with a name matching your theme’s name.
Browse inside that folder to find the file you want to edit, then use the FTP client to download a copy to your computer. You can now edit it in any text editor of your choosing. While it’s possible to use a simple text editor like Notepad for editing, it’s much easier and less likely to cause mistakes if you use a purpose designed code editor, like the free VS Code or Atom.
When you’ve made your changes use the FTP client to upload the file back into the same location. You’ll be asked if you want to overwrite the existing version of the file, and as long as you’re confident you’ve made no errors in your edited file, you can go ahead and do so.
Edit Through Remote Connection
Instead of doing a manual upload and download process for offline HTML editing, you can automate the downloading and uploading part through a remote connection. For this you will need SFTP (secure file transfer protocol) connection details. These may actually be the same as your FTP connection details. Check to make sure your host allows remote connections.
You will also need a code editor capable of working on files remotely and saving changes directly onto the host. There are many to choose from, but to give you an example, the one I use myself for coding on the iPad is simply called Code Editor.
Once you have provided the editor with your SFTP details you should be able to connect to your host and browse your way to your theme files. From there you should be able to open files in the editor, modify them, and when you save your changes they should go directly onto your live site.
Edit Completely Offline via XAMPP
Another option is that instead of editing the theme installed on your live site, you run an offline installation of WordPress and do all your theme editing there. You would still have to manually upload your changes, either via FTP, copying and pasting into the theme editor, or reinstalling the whole theme.
However if you are planning on making extensive modifications this is still the best way, because you have no upload or download time to worry about each time you save, and if you make mistakes they won’t effect your live site.

Consider Using a Child Theme
It’s also worth considering creating a child theme instead of making HTML edits directly to your main theme. This helps insulate your main theme from errors, and preserves your changes when your main theme updates.

In a previous tutorial, we learned how to create a CSS-only vertical organizational chart. Today, as some folks requested, we’ll go through the process of building its corresponding horizontal one.
And here’s the twist; we'll create this new chart without changing a single line of markup from the original, we'll only modify the styles.

The Organizational Chart We’re Building
Here’s the CSS chart we’ll be creating:
On screens up to 1300px wide, the chart will appear in a vertical layout. On larger screens, its data will appear horizontally. Be sure to check this behavior by opening the demo on a large screen and resizing your browser window.
1. Specify the Container
Our chart will live inside a container:

2. Define Some Basic Styles
Before examining its levels, we’ll set up a few reset rules and helper classes:
Notice the rectangle class. We’ll append this to every node/element of our chart.
Additionally, keep an eye on the container styles. Thanks to CSS Grid, we can divide the chart into two parts. The first one will include the first level, while the second one all the others. Plus, we’ll give the container a maximum width that will affect only on smaller screens.
Note: for simplicity, I haven’t optimized the CSS. This will help you get a better understanding of the styles of each level.
3. Specify the Levels
At this point, we’ll have a closer look at the chart levels. As you might remember from the previous tutorial, we’ll have four of them:
Level #1
The first level will only include a single node:

To describe it, we’ll use an h1 tag as it’s the most important part of our chart:

We’ll use its ::before pseudo-element to create a relationship between the first and second levels:
Each list item will act as a grid container that will contain two columns. We'll position the contents of its first one on the top edge of the column axis, while the contents of its last one on the bottom edge of the column axis.
We’ll also define the ::before and ::after pseudo-elements of the h2 elements. Their job will be to create the associations between the adjacent levels:
We’ll associate the first two nodes with the first node of the second level, while the last two with its second node:

Still, inside the initial list where the second level lives, we’ll define two new lists. Each one of them will contain two list items. For each item will specify an h3 element:

4. Going Responsive
As you have already guessed, we follow a desktop-first approach for our styles. Generally speaking, I prefer building for large screens first and then going down to smaller, less complicated ones.
On screens between 1301px and 1650px, the chart will still be in horizontal mode, yet its nodes will have a smaller width (200px instead of 150px).
On screens up to 1300px wide, all chart nodes will appear vertically, like this:
Unlike the horizontal layout, here the width and typography of the text nodes differ depending on their level. The higher the level, the larger the width and typography.
Of course, feel free to change these breakpoints depending on your content.
It’s worth noting that this design is slightly different compared to the responsive layout of the vertical chart:
In case you’re wondering, there isn't any specific purpose behind this new implementation. I just wanted to show you two different responsive layouts. Feel free to use any of these in your pages.
From the styles above, keep an eye especially on the new revert CSS keyword that we apply to the headings. That will help us restore their default browser styles. Merrily enough, its browser support is growing every day.

What if you could use a service that gives you full control over the form, yet doesn’t require you to install anything on your server? Enter Formspree, an online service which gives you the ability to create functional HTML forms without the use of PHP or JavaScript.
Allow me to give you a brief run down of the steps required to get your own Formspree form up and running.
Formspree provides a range of plans, both free and paid, that cover the various amounts of submissions you may receive on your form. Free plans come with unlimited forms and up to 50 submissions a month.
Once logged in to your Formspree account, navigate to the dashboard and click New Form. Name your new form something memorable and click Create Form.
Copy the provided endpoint URL. This URL will be used as the value of the action in your form.
Create Your Form
The next thing you’re going to need is a form, which we’ll build from scratch in HTML. My form is going to be a very straightforward way for people to get in touch with me–I’m going to have a field for their name, email, and their message. Here’s the markup for my form:
You’ll see that I’ve added a submit input and wrapped all the fields with a <form> element. We can style this form however we want. There’s no iframe or anything else to restrict what it looks like.
Connect your form by entering the form endpoint URL that you created in previous step into the code as highlighted below:
To format your submissions in an organised manner use the name attribute to apply labels, these will be shown in Formspree and will be used to help format submissions that arrive in your inbox. Formspree also has a series of name spaced name values that will picked up when the submission is received by Formspree.
For example setting _replyto on the email input will mean that any email entered and submitted can be replied to when replying to the submission that arrives in your inbox.
Remember Your Manners
Adding _next to another hidden input will allow me to set where people will be taken after they've submitted the form.
Built into Formspree is a “honeypot” method of spam prevention. The honeypot technique is as follows; you hide a field inside your form that users don’t see, but spambots do. The spambot will fill in the field, while users won’t. Any submission with this field filled in will be considered spam.
You can use this technique by adding the following to your form:
It’s important you use a style attribute to hide the field. The user’s browser will hide the field using CSS, but the spambot will ignore the CSS altogether and continue to fill in the field. By naming the field “_gotcha”, Formspree will recognise it and ignore any submissions made with this filled in.
Testing Your Form
The final step is to make sure your form works. Visit the page containing your form in your web browser, fill in the form and submit it as a normal user would. You should receive an email containing the content of your form submission!

How to Backup Your WordPress Site
Backing Up WordPress
Most hosting providers nowadays offer backups as standard, and if not as standard then at least as a purchasable addition to your hosting package. If you make use of this, then you might feel you don’t have to make your own backups—but it’s always worth being on the safe side, and I recommend you do!
WordPress Scheduled Backups by Your Hosting Provider
Before we go any further, let me just show you how my hosting provider backs up my WordPress installations. I use SiteGround (and you can get up to 70% off their managed WordPress hosting through Themeforest) and I always recommend it, though most managed WordPress options will offer something similar.
On the Security > Backups page on my SiteGround dashboard you can see every backup which has automatically taken place–in my case they’re scheduled to happen every afternoon. At the top of the page I can also trigger a manual backup if I need one right now.
For each of these backups, I have the option to restore:
all files and databases
files
databases
email
Automated backups like this are definitely a feature which you should look for when choosing a WordPress web host.
Backup Your WordPress Website With a Plugin
There are a bunch of plugins available to manage backups of your website, but arguably the most popular (with literally millions of installs) is Updraft Plus. Install and activate it by going to Plugins > Add New and then searching the WordPress repository for it.
Once installed (it’s free) you can follow the simple instructions to create your backups (check out the massive blue button):
Each time you make a backup, a copy of your website’s files and database will be made and saved in the location of your choosing (on the web server itself, your Dropbox, another web server via FTP, and so on). You can also set a schedule, so you needn’t give it a second thought.
How to Backup Your WordPress Website Manually
To backup your website manually, you need to do two things:
Backup the database
Backup the files
To backup the files, you need access to the server, either through your host’s dashboard (such as cPanel), or via FTP through an FTP Client of your choice (such as FileZilla). Here’s the File Manager in SiteGround, which enables me to explore the whole system and manipulate the files however I want.
To be sure your backup is going to be of use to you in the future, make sure you download the WordPress core files, plus the plugins and theme files too. Download the files to your computer, and then store them somewhere secure.
To backup the database, you’ll need access to the PHPMyAdmin where your WordPress database can be found. In the case of my SiteGround dashboard above, I go to Site > MySQL.
With your database selected, go to Export and then choose the kind of settings you want. A Quick Export Method is fine for us here.
Make sure the Format is set to SQL, and then hit Go. This will export an SQL file with all the contents of the database to your download location.
Conclusion
And that’s how you backup your WordPress website, in a couple of different ways! One thing to note: within WordPress itself, there’s a Tools > Export option. Whilst this can be useful, it’s far from complete as a backup solution. It only exports the content of the website, not the underlying website.
Making elements appear based on their scroll position is a very popular design choice when building web pages but it usually involves using a plugin or library.
In this tutorial you’ll learn how to implement animation on scroll using vanilla JavaScript and CSS. The main advantage of using a custom implementation (as opposed to a library) is that it allows us to optimize our functions for accessibility and performance.

Here’s an example of how animating elements on scroll works:
Our implementation relies on CSS for animations and JavaScript to handle triggering the necessary styles. We’ll start by creating the layout.
1. Define the Page Structure
We’ll create the layout of our page using HTML and then assign a common class name to the elements we want to animate on scroll. This class name is what we’ll be targeting in JavaScript.
In the demo above, the elements were assigned the class name js-scroll so the HTML looks something like this:

2. Styling With CSS
CSS does a lot of the heavy-lifting as it determines the style of animation of each element. In this case, we’ll be animating the elements with the class name scrolled.
With this code, any js-scroll element on the page is hidden with an opacity of 0 until the class name scrolled is applied to it.
3. Targeting Elements With JavaScript
Once we have our layout and styles, we’re going to create the JavaScript functions to assign the class name to the elements when they scroll into view. We’re also going to fade out the elements in JavaScript instead of CSS, as we want the elements to be visible in the event a browser does not have JavaScript enabled.
We’ll break down the logic like this:
Get all js-scroll elements on the page
Fade out elements
Detect when the element is within the viewport
Assign the scrolled class name to the element if it is in view.
Target Elements on The Page
We’ll target all the js-scroll elements on the page using the document.querySelectorAll() method. It should look like this:
This allows the elements to have their default styling if JavaScript is disabled in the browser.
Detecting When an Element Is in View
We can detect when an element is in view of the user by determining if the distance of the element from the top of the page is less than the height of the visible part of the page.
In JavaScript, we use the getBoundingClientRect().top method to get an element’s distance from the top of the page, and window.innerHeight or document.documentElement.clientHeight to get the height of the viewport.

We’ll create an elementInView function using the above logic:
In this case, the function returns true if the element has scrolled by the scrollOffset amount into the page. Modifying the logic gives us a different function for targeting elements based on percentage scroll.
An added benefit of a custom implementation is that we can define the logic to suit our specific needs.
Note: it’s possible to use the Intersection Observer API to achieve the same effect, however, at the time of writing this article, Intersection Observer is not supported in Internet Explorer so it doesn’t fit our bill of “works on all browsers”.
Assign Class Name to Element
Now that we’re able to detect if our element has scrolled into the page, we’ll need to define a function to handle displaying the element–in this case we’re displaying the element by assigning the scrolled class name.
An optional feature is to reset the element to its default state when it’s no longer in view. We can do that by defining a hideScrollElement function and including it in an else statement to our above function:
We see that the elements appear with different animations. This was done by assigning different CSS animations to class names. The HTML for this demo looks like this:

Note: the classes next to the js-scroll class are what we target in CSS to handle the different animations. In our CSS stylesheet, we’ll have:
We don’t need to make any changes to the JavaScript code since the logic remains the same. This means we can have any number of different animations on a page without writing new functions.
5. Increasing Performance with Throttle
Whenever we include a function in a scroll listener, that function is called every time the user scrolls the page. Scrolling a page of 500px can cause a function to be called at least 50 times. If we’re trying to include a lot of elements on the page, this can cause our page to slow down significantly.
Throttle Function to the Rescue
We can reduce the number of times a function is called by using a “throttle function”. A throttle function is a higher order function that calls the function passed into it only once during a specified time interval.
It’s especially useful with scrolling events as we don’t need to detect every pixel scrolled by the user. For example, if we have a throttle function with a timer of 100ms, the function will only be called once for every 100ms the user scrolls.
A throttle function can be implemented in JavaScript like this:

Now our handleScrollAnimation function is called every 250ms while the user is scrolling.

6. Improving Accessibility
Performance isn’t the only requirement when implementing a custom feature; we also need to design for accessibility. Designing for accessibility means taking users’ choices and circumstances into consideration. Some users may not want to have animations at all, so we need to account for that.
With these lines of code, we ensure that the animated elements are always visible and the animation is turned off for all elements.
The prefers-reduced-motion query isn’t fully supported across all browsers so we can include a JavaScript fallback:
