5 Quick Tips for LMS Websites

Now that you’ve seen the best Moodle examples, here are five quick tips for LMS websites that will help you create a powerful school or university website and learning platform.

1. Make It Easy To View And Purchase Courses

The most important tip for a successful LMS website is to make it easy for potential students to view available courses and purchase them. You can do this by organizing your homepage to highlight your most popular courses or adding course categories.

2. Add Gamification

Be sure to add gamification features to your LMS website. Quizzes, progress tabs, and engagement points that give them access to symbolic rewards or exclusive classes will help keep your student engagement high and increase the overall completion rate.

3. Optimize For Mobile

More and more people are using their phones and tablets to access the Internet. Ensure your learning platform is optimized for mobile so students can easily continue learning no matter what device they’re using.

4. Provide Links To Support

Make your students feel supported by providing them with links to support and any additional material they might need. This will help them have a better student experience and make it more likely for them to finish the course instead of giving up because they feel stuck.

5. Make Use Of Analytics

Lastly, make use of analytics provided in Moodle itself. This will help you understand how successful are your students as well as which courses and classes are really popular and which might need updating or improving.

How to Build a Responsive Navigation Bar With Flexbox

$
0
0

Time for a practical exercise in flexbox! In this tutorial we will use flexbox to create a mobile-first, responsive, toggleable navigation bar with different layouts for mobile, tablet, and desktop screens.

Note: This tutorial has been updated to include a responsive submenu and pure JavaScript instead of jQuery.

Responsive Flexbox Navigation Bar

Here’s a complete video version of the tutorial. Follow along with us over on our Envato Tuts+ YouTube channel:

Flexbox is Perfect for Responsive Navigation

Flexbox is a versatile layout module with which we can create one-dimensional layouts that require flexibility, such as responsive menus. Using flexbox’s ordering, alignment, and sizing properties, we can build navigation bars that adapt their layouts to the viewport size while keeping the HTML outline logical and accessible.

In this tutorial, we’ll look into how to create a responsive navigation bar with flexbox. Our flexbox navigation will have three different layouts, depending on the viewport size:

  1. mobile layout in which only the logo and a toggle button will be visible by default and users can open and close the menu using the toggle,
  2. tablet layout in which we will show two call-to-action buttons between the logo and toggle in the default state and the rest of the menu will remain toggleable,
  3. desktop layout in which all the menu items, except for the toggle button, will be visible on the screen.

We will use media queries to detect the viewport size of the user’s browser. Our responsive navigation bar will be mobile-first, so we will create the mobile layout first. Then, we will add the tablet- and desktop-specific CSS using min-width media queries.

The navigation bar will also have a JavaScript-based dropdown submenu that opens and closes when the user clicks the parent menu item.

Here’s how the menu will look on mobile:

Mobile menu with flexbox

Here’s the tablet version:

Tablet menu with flexbox

And, this is how it will look on desktop:

Desktop menu with flexbox

You can also test, fork, and play around with the interactive demo on CodePen:

New to Flexbox?

If you aren’t used to flexbox, or need a refresher, these beginner guides will give you all the skills you need to complete this tutorial:

1. Create the HTML

The HTML is a simple <ul> list, as you can see below. The .menu class will be the flex container and the list items will be the flex items. Their order will adapt to the viewport size of the user’s device. For example, the Log In and Sign Up buttons will come first on mobile, but will be displayed at the end of the menu on desktop. We will achieve this effect by making use of flexbox’s ordering properties.

You have probably noticed that menu items with a submenu (“Services” and “Plans”) have an <a> tag without an href attribute. We do this because these “empty” parent menu items don’t lead to any other page–they just open and close the submenu. Using the anchor tag without href is permitted and prevents the page from jumping up on small screens when the user clicks the empty menu item to open or close the submenu.

We also add the tabindex="0" attribute to <a> elements without a href attribute. This is because empty <a> tags are omitted from the default tab order, so we need to put them back to the tabbing order with the tabindex attribute to keep the menu keyboard-accessible.

Note: the toggle button at the end of the list uses a Font Awesome icon. To make the demo work, you’ll need to add the Font Awesome library to the <head> section of the HTML document from CDN using the code below. (If you want to make the menu work offline, you’ll need to host Font Awesome locally.)

2. Add Some Basic Styling

For basic styling, I’ve set some default values and colors, however you can use any of your own style rules as well:

3. Start With the Mobile Navigation

As our navigation will be mobile-first, we start with the mobile layout. Most responsive flexbox menus use column-based layouts for mobile, as menu items can be quickly packed below each other by adding the flex-direction: column; rule to the flex container. Even though this is an excellent solution, we won’t use it in our example.

Instead, we will create a wrapping, row-based layout for mobile so that we can display the logo and toggle button next to each other on top of the menu.

Mobile layout

The CSS trick here is that we make regular menu items such as Home and About span across the entire container using the width: 100%; rule. So, flexbox will display them below each other, while the logo and toggle will retain their natural sizes and sit on top of the navbar in the same row.

In the CSS below, we also use the justify-content and align-items properties to align the flex items horizontally and vertically. Besides this, we hide the .item elements using the display: none; rule. Menu items will be only revealed when the user clicks the toggle button. The .active class is not in the HTML code, we will dynamically add it with JavaScript.

As you can see above, we have also changed the order of menu items with the help of the order property. Our HTML outline follows a logical order. This is how we want screen reader users and search engine bots to go through the menu.

However, in the mobile layout, we want to show the logo and toggle button on top of the menu. We also want to display the two call-to-action buttons (“Log In” and “Sign Up”) before regular menu items. So, we set up the following order:

  • .logo gets the order: 0; value, as it will be the first item (however, as this is the default value of order, we don’t need to add it to the CSS),
  • .toggle gets 1, as it comes right after .logo,
  • .item.button belonging to the Log In and Sign Up buttons gets 2,
  • and .item belonging to the rest of menu items gets 3.

4. Style the Submenu

As this is mobile-first navigation, we’ll primarily style the submenu with mobile screens in mind. This is a great technique, as it’s usually harder to create a user-friendly submenu for small screens than for larger ones. Then, we can use the same submenu layout for tablet screens as well. For desktop, we’ll only need to change the positioning of the submenu.

By default, the submenu is set to display: none; and will be only revealed when the user clicks the parent menu item. We will add the required JavaScript functionality in the next two steps before moving on to the tablet menu.

As you can see above, now we add the Font Awesome icons using CSS instead of HTML. These icons we add using the ::after pseudo element will be the little down arrows shown next to each menu item that has a submenu.

If you remember we added the Font Awesome icon for the toggle button with HTML in Step 1. This is because the toggle button will be targeted with JavaScript, so it has to be present in the DOM. However, the down arrows here are just style elements that indicate the presence of the submenu. Since no functionality relies on them, it’s better to add them with CSS.

5. Add the Toggle Functionality with JavaScript

We’ll set up the toggle functionality by adding a click event listener to the toggle button that opens and closes the menu on mobile. In the JavaScript code, we will use the ES6 syntax that gives us access to the const and let notation and the for...of loop and already has good browser support.

For the custom JavaScript, create an empty script.js file and add it to the HTML before the closing </body> tag:

And here’s the JavaSript code responsible for the toggle functionality:

  1. First, we select the menu and the toggle button using the querySelector() method so that we can access them with JavaScript.
  2. Then, we add the custom toggleMenu() function that will be called when the toggle is clicked.
  3. Lastly, we add the event listener that will be listening to the click event using the addEventListener() method.

6. Add the Dropdown Functionality with JavaScript

Now, when the user clicks the toggle button, the menu is activated and deactivated, however, the submenu is still hidden. We will add this functionality with the following JavaScript:

Here, we add the .submenu-active class to each menu item with a submenu when the user clicks it.

  1. First, we select all menu items with the querySelectorAll() method that returns a node list (rather than a single element like querySelector()).
  2. In the custom toggleItem() function, we add and remove .submenu-active to/from the clicked element. Note that in the else if block, we remove the class from every other menu items that were previously opened. This way, it won’t happen that two submenus are open at the same time, as they can cover each other on desktop.
  3. Finally, we loop through the items classList using a for...of loop. Within the if block, we add two event listeners to menu items that have a submenu: one for the click event for regular users who access the menu by clicking or tapping, and one for the keypress event for keyboard users.

7. Create the Tablet Menu

We’ll create the tablet layout using a min-width media query. On tablet, four menu items will be visible by default: the logo, the two call-to-action buttons (“Log In” and “Sign Up”), and the toggle. To make everything pretty, our CSS will:

  • change the order of the menu items to adapt the layout to tablet viewports,
  • realign the items (see the explanation below),
  • make the Log In and  Sign Up buttons look like real buttons (in the mobile layout, they look like links, as they are part of the toggleable dropdown list).

In code:

In the tablet layout, menu items are aligned in a different way. If you take a look at the four visible menu items, you will see that the two buttons are displayed in the center, while the logo and toggle are pushed to the left and right end of the container:

Responsive tablet menu

We can achieve this effect using the flex: 1; CSS rule. The flex property is a shorthand for flex-growflex-shrink, and flex-basis. It can exist with many different value combinations. When it’s declared with only one value, it belongs to flex-grow, with flex-shrink and flex-basis keeping their default values.

In the CSS above, we have added the flex: 1; rule to the .logo and .toggle elements. In this way, we can tell the browser that if there’s any positive space on the screen, we want to share it between these two elements. As the Log In and Sign Up buttons retain their default 0 value for flex-grow, they won’t get anything from the extra space. So, they will stay in the center of the container, as they adhere to the justify-content: center; rule set on the flex container.

8. Create the Desktop Menu

The desktop menu hides the toggle, sets back the original order and natural width of each item, and repositions the submenu.

It’s important to keep in mind that the tablet-specific rules also apply to the desktop menu. This is because here, the viewport width is larger than both 700px and 960px, so both media queries take effect. So, .logo retains its flex: 1; property and pushes the rest of the items to the end of the container.

9. Let Users Close the Submenu By Clicking Anywhere on the Page

Now there’s only one step back. As the dropdown menu is activated on the click event, it doesn’t close automatically when the user hovers away from the top menu item. This is especially annoying on desktop where the dropdown can cover the content.

So, it would be nice to enable users to close the submenu by clicking anywhere on the screen. We can add the feature with JavaScript:

The custom closeSubmenu() function checks if the user clicked inside the menu with the help of the target property. If not and there’s an active submenu on the screen, the .submenu-active class will be removed, so the submenu closes itself. We add the event listener to the document object, as we want to listen for clicks on the whole page.

You’ve Built a Responsive Navigation Bar With Flexbox and JavaScript!

Our mobile-first, responsive navigation bar is up and running in three different layouts.

Here’s a reminder of the end result:

Flexbox is a great tool to implement complex layouts without any tweaks. If you combine flexbox’s alignment, ordering, and sizing properties with media queries, you can create different layouts for different viewports without having to manipulate the HTML source code.

How to Design Your Website for Generation Z (+ Great Theme Examples)

Generation Z can’t remember a time before the internet. Born between the late 1990s and early 2000s, they’re true digital natives—the first generation to grow up knowing that a world of information is available at the click of a button or swipe of a screen.

And they’re powerful. With this generation expected to account for 40% of all consumers as soon as 2020, they’re a force to be reckoned with. Plus, now holding $44 billion in buying power, it’s clear that their finances have gone way beyond pocket money. As their influence and financial prowess continue to grow while they progress through working life, attracting and maintaining the attention of this key group can make or break your business.

attracting and maintaining the attention of this key group can make or break your business

Now you know what is Generation Z and what they mean. Therefore, if you’re looking to set up or update your WordPress site by selecting a premium template from ThemeForest, follow these key tips to make sure you’re doing everything you can to appeal to this young yet influential generation.

10 Gen Z Websites Design Trends in 2020

Now, let's start with some useful Gen Z graphic design trends and Gen Z websites tips so you can build an attractive and professional website.

1. Keep It Simple

Growing up with technology means Gen Z are used to sifting through the noise to find the information most relevant to them. And with that, attention spans are decreasing—Gen Z have an attention span of just 8 seconds versus millennials’ 12 seconds. They’re hungry for information, so make sure your user experience is simple and you don’t bombard them with unnecessary content.

Simple WordPress Theme: The Simple - A Simple Multi-Purpose Business Theme

The clue’s in the name—this WordPress theme can be used for Gen Z websites and is as simple as it gets! With more than 30 demos, you can easily see what your site might look like once you’ve added your content, plus the visually appealing fullscreen pages give the template a modern feel.

2. Quality Is More Than a ‘Nice to Have’

55% of Gen Zs won’t go more than five hours without internet access—and 27% won’t go more than one. With figures like that, it’s fair to say they’re going to be your harshest critics.

You’d just need to briefly see the internet history of a typical Gen Z to see how many sites they typically visit in a single day. For your site to stand any chance of getting noticed, you have to make sure it’s designed to the quality they’re used to.

Professional, Quality Theme: Argenta - Creative Multipurpose WordPress Theme

Although ThemeForest is packed with high-quality WordPress themes, the Argenta theme regularly scores five stars for not only great code quality but also excellent customer support.

3. Fast Loading Speeds

Of course, in a world where we’re all used to getting information when and where we want it, fast loading speeds are essential if you want to keep people’s eyes on your products. In fact, as mentioned in my recent article, every second counts as the probability of bounce increases by a staggering 32% as page load time increases from 1 second to 3 seconds

A generation used to constant information will not respond well to slow-performing websites—after all, they’re not going to remember the days of painstakingly slow dial-up internet.

Fast Loading WordPress Theme: Skylar - Fast, Optimized & Highly Customizable Multi-Purpose WordPress Theme

Again, the vast majority of WordPress themes are optimized for fast loading time, but this theme places speed front and center. Skylar claims to load in just 29 milliseconds. This WordPress theme is that fast because all customizing options are in a plugin, and thus, the code works only inside admin area. This theme comes with 6 amazing demos, like this one below to create a personal brand website that's very stylish and attractive.

4. No Barriers to Content

Continuing the theme of limited time and attention, Gen Z list pop-up forms as their top frustration within websites. Of course, for the website in question, it can be a valuable way to capture data, but it can be at the cost of upping your bounce rate and losing potential customers.

Check out our video tutorial on best practices for using pop-ups:

Easy User Experience WordPress Theme: Adorn - Minimal WooCommerce Theme

Rather than immediately putting your potential customers off with clunky data captures, choosing a theme which cleanly presents content in an immediately digestible format is far more likely to appeal to Gen Z. Adding an option to sign up for a newsletter without blocking the user experience can be a good compromise.

5. Make It Personal

Despite wanting to remove barriers to a streamlined user experience, Gen Z are willing to trade some of their personal information to gain a more personalized user experience. In fact, 67% of Millenials and Gen Z expect offers that are personalized to them—a full 16% higher than Gen X (those born between 1961 and 1981).

You can appeal to this need for personal content by installing free plugins like Advanced Personalization. It’s super easy to use and doesn’t require any coding skills to do so.

6. Mobile, Mobile, Mobile

A key aspect to know what is Generation Z is to understand their attachment to mobile phones. Although research suggests that Gen Z enjoy visiting physical stores, they are savvy customers, and 67% say they will search for products online before they make a purchase. What’s more, 6 in 10 Gen Zs have purchased on their mobile within the last month.

Whether they’re researching or buying via mobile, you need to make sure your website is fully responsive to encourage them to part with their funds through your site rather than losing out to a competitor. It’s essential to integrate your site with WordPress’s WooCommerce plugin if you want to enable your users to buy directly from your site.

Mobile WordPress Theme: Puca - Optimized Mobile WooCommerce Theme

Designed with mobile in mind, this WordPress theme will provide a top-notch user experience for any customer who wants to research your product via their smartphone. It’s also fully integrated with WooCommerce to help users purchase quickly and simply.

7. Be Aware of Trends

Ever heard of Millennial Pink? It took social media by storm a few years ago, covering picture-perfect Instagram posts and other online content in a rose-colored hue. Well, today it’s officially been replaced by a cheery color dubbed Gen-Z Yellow, one of the Gen Z graphic design trends.

Of course, you need to make sure your site reflects your overarching brand, but it’s worth paying attention to design fashions to see if you can incorporate them in imagery or otherwise. With some going so far as to suggest Gen Z spend 10 hours a day engaging with online content, they’ll be au fait with trends, and you want to make sure you can follow suit.

Colorful WordPress Theme: North - Responsive WooCommerce Theme

Although most templates from ThemeForest offer the potential to amend color schemes, the clean and simple North WordPress theme really makes the most of color to bring a clean, clear, and modern theme. With pops of color like this, you could amend hues as fashions come and go.

8. Make It Accessible

This is essential no matter the generation, but with Gen Z being the most diverse demographic yet, you must do everything you can to make sure everyone can use it. Not only is it the right thing to do, but making your site accessible to all will also help to increase your potential number of customers, plus boost your SEO.

For advice on making your website as accessible as possible, you can read WordPress’s accessibility guidelines here. You can also test how accessible your site is, using tools like this one from the Bureau of Internet Accessibility. You can also read more about accessibility in my recent article.

Accessible WordPress Theme: Ginger – Restaurant WordPress Theme

Again, there are many options to choose from, but this theme lists the option for adding an accessible image lightbox as one of its key features. It means alt tags can be added to image galleries to ensure everyone can hear image descriptions if they are visually impaired (alt tags also help with SEO).

9. Look Beyond the Bottom Line

Gen Z want to do good. Around 60% say they want to have a job that makes the world a better place—plus, 82% say social responsibility is an important characteristic of their favorite brands. Many believe this widespread philanthropy was born due to Gen Z growing up as social media and instant messaging made political, social, and environmental strife impossible to ignore.

Whether it’s donating a portion of your profits to charity, or even offering consumers the chance to donate to a crowdfunding campaign, thinking beyond the bottom line is certainly appealing to this young generation.

Crowdfunding WordPress Theme: Green Nature - Environmental / Nonprofit WordPress

Whether you’re trying to launch a business or a not-for-profit, there are many options out there to integrate crowdfunding as part of your site. Green Nature allows space for lots of impactful imagery while trying to encourage people to donate.

10. Don’t Patronize

This is a hyper-aware generation, with 84% saying they’re interested in current affairs, world affairs, politics, etc. This is a generation not to be patronized, so you want to avoid doing so in any aspect of your website—whether via copywriting, the color scheme and branding, or even the overall messaging.

Being authentic and not hiding behind tired marketing messages or design is essential when considering your web design.

Divi vs. Elementor: WordPress Page Builders Compared

$
0
0

Let’s talk about the pros and cons of using the Divi vs. Elementor WordPress page builders. Divi and Elementor are two of the most popular page builder options available and if you’re just getting started with this kind of tool you’re probably wondering which is best for you.

We’re going to look at the differences between the two, the similarities, and hopefully by the end you’ll be able to decide which is most suitable for you.

Divi or Elementor?

Watch this video for even more detailed analysis of which WordPress page builder is right for you. Follow along with us over on our Envato Tuts+ YouTube channel:

How We’ll Compare the Two

We’re going to use 4 categories to compare these two WordPress page builders:

  1. Interface and User Experience
  2. Modules
  3. Premade Templates
  4. Price

At the very end I’ll also give you my personal recommendation. So let’s look at Divi vs. Elementor!

1. Interface and User Experience

Both Divi and Elementor are visual drag-and-drop tools, which makes them really easy to use. Let’s start by opening up a page with Elementor. Here’s what we see straight away; an option to edit the page with Elementor:

edit the page with Elementor

That will trigger a sidebar with all my Elementor options. To add an element to the page, find what you‘re looking for in the sidebar and drag it into position, like so:

drag heading
Dragging a heading element into position

In this case, we can type directly into the heading element on the page, or we can change any properties we like in the sidebar. This applies to all elements, in various ways.

In Divi, the page prompts you to edit it in a similar way:

edit page in Divi

Will that clicked, we enter the editor. At this point it’s a little different from Elementor: to add an element we click on the plus icon like so:

add element divi

This then opens a popup window with all the available modules:

Divi modules

Choose the module you’re looking for, click it, and that will open another popup with all the various options and properties. This particular popup is floating, but you can click the Snap to Left button on it to dock it to the left of the screen, in a similar fashion to Elementor.

Once you’ve added a module/element to your page, to edit it again you need to hover over it and hit the settings (gear icon) button.

User Experience

In terms of the overall experience, in my opinion, Divi’s page builder seems a little more intuitive, easier to use. All the modules can be edited quickly, dragged and moved, and have lots of options easily to hand.

Divi’s color-coding makes things very clear too; the sections, rows, and modules all have color-coded controls and borders, so it’s easy to see where you are in the layout. Elementor lacks this visual cue, which is a shame I think.

Divi also offers a really easy way to alter the padding and margins on parts of the page. Hover over a section, row, or element, and you’ll see the margin and padding highlighted. Drag the highlighted area to change its size, and that’s all there is to it:

Padding in Divi
Padding in Divi

Similarly, you can change the minimum height of the module, section etc. by dragging the border.

This is all possible in Elementor too, but needs to be done in the settings panel of whatever you’re editing.

2. Modules (or Elements)

Here’s the thing: Elementor has slightly more modules than Divi, even in the free version. We’ll discuss pricing in a moment, but Elementor Pro has even more elements to choose from.

Additionally, by installing the Essential Addons for Elementor plugin you gain access to even more free elements.

Essential Addons for Elementor plugin

Plugins to extend the amount of modules are also available for Divi, but not so many.

supreme modules lite

If we were to compare the two page builders from a modules point of view, I would say Elementor takes this round.

3. Premade Page Builder Templates

Premade page templates are a huge timesaver when designing a website. Currently, Elementor includes around 40 free templates, doubling that amount in the pro version.

To access the templates, edit a page in WordPress then hit the Add Template icon:

To access the templates edit a page in WordPress then hit the Add Template icon

You’ll get a popup showing all the available templates, and there will be some tagged with PRO which are only available with the paid version of Elementor. Learn more about this process with the following tutorials:

Divi, on the other hand, has around 170 Layout Packs on offer (at the time of writing) with more added each month.

These Layout Packs (more than just templates) are a little different, so to see what I mean by this, go to edit a page and select the Choose a Premade Layout option.

Choose a Premade Layout

As you’ll see from the packs which are on offer, a layout pack is built of several page designs, not just one. Take a look at this restaurant layout pack, for example. You’ll see it comprises several pages, and a range of layout options.

Take a look at this restaurant layout pack

This is a big improvement on the simple templates available with Elementor, though Elementor does have something called Template Kits which are available in the pro version.

Another big advantage to using Elementor is its use of Blocks.

Another big advantage to using Elementor is its use of Blocks

These are very simple, very small, blocks of elements. For example a hero area, or a contact form, a pull quote, and they’re all editable once you’ve slotted them into your layout.

A/B Testing

Divi offers one other layout bonus, and that’s A/B Testing. You can select two layouts for your page, apply them both to different variants, and test the effectiveness of each one.

So when it comes to premade templates I believe that Divi has the better offering, largely because of the layout packs, which are awesome.

4. Prices and Licensing

Now onto pricing (bear in mind prices are subject to change), and this is where the choice between the two might become very clear for a lot of people.

Starting with Elementor, we covered the free version already, and going pro will cost you $49, $99, or $199 depending on the number of site licenses you want. At $199 per year, 1,000 sites should have you covered if you’re working for clients. Again, the free version is a great bonus.

Divi, on the other hand, doesn’t have a free version. Prices start at $89 per year for a fully featured license, or $249 will grant you lifetime access. So even though you always need to pay something, I would personally say that the two pricing tiers on offer for Divi are excellent value.

Conclusion: Divi vs. Elementor

So which of the two page builders would I recommend you use? I would say that if you’re just starting out and want to learn about using page builders, go for Elementor. Its free version means you don’t have to spend a time, and can just dive right in.

If you’re planning to take things more seriously and use a page builder over the long term, I’d say Divi offers better value and a richer selection of features.

This is my personal opinion though, so bear in mind it’s always worth taking a look yourself. And if you’re in need of more detail, take a look at the video at the top of the page.

Thanks for reading, and let us know in the comments which is your preferred page builder for WordPress!

Product photos matter. When you’re dealing with a single product store, be sure to include multiple product photos from different angles. You can also include photos of product variations.

2. Focus On Benefits First

Most people buy because the product in question will make their life better. While features are important, put the primary focus on the benefits your product provides.

3. Consider Adding Video Reviews And Testimonials

It’s no secret that people buy from brands they trust and the best way to increase that trust is to include reviews and testimonials about your product in your store. This works even better if you include video review and testimonials since video has a higher conversion rate than other content formats.

Consider Adding Video Reviews And Testimonials

4. Pay Attention To Text Formatting

Avoid long paragraphs and walls of text. Instead, make use of headings and bullet points to break up your copy visually and make it easier to skim through.

5. Simplify Your Checkout

Long and complicated checkout process is one of the main reasons why customers don’t finish their purchase. By simplifying your checkout, you can reduce cart abandonment and successfully sell more of your product.

4 Ways to Resize Elements in Figma

$

In this quick tip I’ll show you 4 ways you can resize elements in Figma, in case the default method doesn’t behave as you expect it to. Let’s begin!

Resizing Elements in Figma

Here’s a complete video version of the tutorial. Follow along with us over on our Envato Tuts+ YouTube channel:

1. Default: Click and Drag

By default in Figma, to resize an element you need to select it, then grab one of the transformation controls and drag the object as you need. Its dimensions will be displayed on a tool tip as you do so.

Figmas Scale Tool

Press SHIFT whilst you’re doing this and you’ll constrain the proportions.

When Clicking and Dragging Doesn’t Work

You’ll find that sometimes this approach doesn’t work as you might expect; like on objects with strokes for example. For example, this icon, when scaled using the same technique, gets completely distorted because the stroke stays the same width:

stroke width in figma

To prevent this you need to do things differently..

2. Figma’s Scale Tool

The scale tool in Figma can be found here (or keyboard shortcut K):

Figmas Scale Tool

The cursor will change slightly, and now you can click and drag the controls in the same way, but retain the stroke width proportion as you resize the object.

3. The Properties Inspector

If you want to change the size of an object extremely precisely, reach for the width and height fields in the inspector:

The Properties Inspector

Either drag the values with your mouse cursor, or enter the values with the keyboard.

Math Bonus

As a nice extra you can even perform math operations in the inspector fields. Entering 300+150 will resolve to 450 (for example) and all other common operations will work just fine.

4. Keyboard Shortcuts

Finally, the last way you can resize objects in Figma is with the keyboard shortcuts. Select an object, then press down CTRL on Windows, or COMMAND on Mac, then use the arrow keys to increase the width or height of the object 1px at a time. Pressing SHIFT at the same time will increase the increment to 10px to speed things up.

That’s a Wrap!

And those are the 4 ways you can resize objects in Figma! I hope you enjoyed this quick guide, and don’t forget to check out our other Figma resources listed below.

Now it's time to edit the modal popup to fit our specific needs. We want this modal popup to be very simple. We would like to offer a free download through this modal pop and have the user click a button to receive this free download.

First, we will remove the ConvertPlus logo. Click on the logo and, in the left-hand editor, click None from the drop-down menu. Next, we are going to change the text on the popup. We will change the top text to say "Get Your Free Download Now!"

Adding text to modal popup

Now we will change the second-level text to say "Click The Button Below." Then we will change the "Shop Now" text to say "FREE DOWNLOAD." Finally, we will add our download link by inserting our link in the Button link field in the left-hand editor.

To make this modal popup go live on our website, we will click the gear icon on the far left-hand side of the popup editor. Click the Modal Status drop-down menu and click on the Enable Modal On Site button. There you have it! Your modal popup will be present on all of your WordPress website pages.

What is Jetpack for WordPress?

$

Have you ever wondered “What is Jetpack”? If you’ve ever run a WordPress website the chances are you’ve seen its name crop up.

Jetpack is an awesome free plugin for WordPress. It can help make your WordPress site secure, make it faster, and also grow your audience. Jetpack is the work of Automattic, the same company behind WordPress itself, so you can be sure it’s reliable, well built, and will continue to be properly maintained.

In this tutorial we’ll be looking at Jetpack for WordPress; its features, how you can get started with it, and why you might consider using it.

What is Jetpack for WordPress?

Here’s a complete video version of the tutorial. Follow along with us over on our Envato Tuts+ YouTube channel:

Jetpack Pricing

Let’s jump straight in and talk about Jetpack’s pricing options. A moment ago I referred to it as being a free plugin, which is certainly true, but some additional pricing tiers take Jetpack even further.

  • The Free plan is more than enough to get started and give your website a boost. It includes some really useful things like CDN, brute force protection, activity log, lazy loading images, site stats, automated social media posting, and more.
  • The Personal tier costs $3.50 per month (at the time of writing), giving you more options like Spam protection and daily backups, in addition to all the features of the free version.
  • The Premium tier costs $9 per month and adds features (such as unlimited video hosting and scheduled social media posting) on top of the Personal package.
  • Lastly, the Professional tier costs $29 per month and adds unlimited premium themes, realtime backups, and an unlimited activity log to the mix.

Check out the pricing page on jetpack.com for more details—in fact, the pricing page is perhaps the best place to get a real idea of what Jetpack does and the features it offers.

Getting Started With Jetpack

To get things started we need to setup an account on wordpress.com. Coupling our website to this account will allow us to run JetPack and take advantages of all its features.

Login to WordPress.com

So, visit https://wordpress.com/ and if you already have an account click Login, or if not, click Get Started instead, then follow the instructions. You’ll end up logged in, looking at the reader page.

Download the WordPress.com App (Optional)

At this point it’s worth mentioning that you can use one of wordpress.com’s apps (desktop or mobile, and all operating systems) to run your actual account. You may find it preferable to using the web version. Visit apps.wordpress.com for more details and downloads.

Download the WordPresscom App Optional

Install Jetpack on Your WordPress Site

Next, we need to install the Jetpack plugin on our WordPress site. In another browser tab open up your WordPress site admin and go to Plugins > Add New. Even without searching, you’ll likely find Jetpack by WordPress.com on the first page of results.

Click Install Now and then Activate it. With that done, we now need to set up Jetpack, so click on the button you’re presented with:

Install Jetpack on Your WordPress Site

As you’re already logged in to your wordpress.com account in the same browser, the setup process will detect that fact and ask you to approve access to your account. Click Approve.

You’ll then be asked which Jetpack plan you wish to use (in our case we’ll opt for the free tier), and that’s it! You’ve installed and set up Jetpack.

Jetpack Site Accelerator

As we’ve discussed, Jetpack comes with a whole bunch of tools, and the first one you’ll be prompted to activate is the Site Accelerator. Activating it will boost your page speed, optimize images, and serve static files (such as CSS and JavaScript) from the CDN (content delivery network) servers.

Manage Your Site on WordPress.com

Going back to wordpress.com your website will now be showing up under the My Sites section. With it selected, you’ll see the Stats and Insights dashboard (no results just yet, of course).

If you go to Site (in the left sidebar) you’ll have access to the pages, and the posts, and other aspects of your WordPress site, so you can manage them all from here too. You can manage themes, comments, media—in fact, all the things you’d be able to do in the WordPress admin itself. The advantage of managing things through wordpress.com is that you have one centralized location to run multiple WordPress websites.

In amongst all the Settings, you’ll see Jetpack options and recommendations. Toggle them on and off to customize whatever you want on your site:

Manage Your Site on WordPresscom

For examples of some of Jetpack’s features in action, such as its media slideshow, check out the video at the top of this page.

Now You Know What Jetpack for WordPress is!

That’s the essence of setting up Jetpack. Its advantages are fairly clear, even when only using the free version, because performance and security should be priorities for anyone running a website.

Let us know in the comments if you use Jetpack, which features you think are always worth it, and perhaps even those you try to avoid!

24 Amazing Bootstrap Templates to Try in 2020

Sometimes getting a fully custom-built website isn’t an option. For that reason purchasing an already made HTML template can be a lifesaver, especially when the template is easy to customize! Bootstrap is a superb framework because it’s well-supported, well-documented and very well-liked by developers, designers, and business owners worldwide.

Bootstrap is one of the most widely used frameworks and statistics don’t fall behind on proving that. Out of the top 1 million websites in the world, more than 20% use bootstrap in their libraries which proves that Bootstrap is rather helpful if you’re working in a mobile-first front-end web development environment.

Ever since its release in 2011, the framework has been constantly updated and supported. While in 2013 it only had 1.6% of the market share, that grew more than a dozen times. The best part about Bootstrap is its flexibility which allows for it to be supercharged with a plentitude of Bootstrap UI kits and be integrated with Design Language Systems.

Bootstrap is a great tool for maintaining design patterns and consistency in design, but also in code. The fact that it’s the sixth most-starred project on GitHub proves that the repository isn’t only popular, but an ever growing and constantly used library.

Bootstrap’s Main Features

1. Bootstrap’s Basic Framework

The main purpose of building with Bootstrap is to apply its choices of size, colors, fonts and grids which come in a form of basic style definitions across the full spectrum of HTML elements. This results in a robust and uniform appearance for certain elements and containers.

Although the predefined style is good for building stuff straight out of the box, it is easily possible to modify and edit to your needs.

bootstrap grid
Bootstrap’s grid is flexible and robust—check out more examples in the docs

2. Bootstrap’s JavaScript Components

Bootstrap comes with several JavaScript components in the form of jQuery and JavaScript plugins which allow for additional UI elements to be added, such as tooltips, dialog boxes and sliders. The components in Bootstrap consist of an HTML structure, a CSS declaration and sometimes additional JavaScript code, permitting further functionality for certain interface elements.

3. Bootstrap’s Layout Tools

Some of the most important features of Bootstrap are the layout components that are implemented through a CSS grid layout. The layout component of Bootstrap defines rows and columns and has come to become an industry standard used by both developers and designers alike.

“The [...] important benefit of open source is the vast community that surrounds this tool. If you ever run into issues with using Bootstrap there is a big community that is ready to help.” –  Brenden Thornton

A Quick Guide to Figma’s Image Fill Settings

$

In this tutorial you’ll learn all about Figma’s image fill settings. There are 4 in total, and each one allows you to manipulate an object’s image fill differently. So with that said, let’s take a look!

Image Fill Settings in Figma

Here’s a complete video version of this quick tutorial. Follow along with us over on our Envato Tuts+ YouTube channel:

It Started with a Fill

Begin by creating an object on the artboard, then going to fill (in the property inspector to the right) and selecting Image Fill as the type.

image fill

You can then upload an image of your choice and you’ll be given the 4 fill type options, like so:

fill type

1. Fill

By default, Fill will be selected. This ensures that the whole object is filled with the image. If the object is wider or taller than the image, the image is stretched and cropped accordingly, but always centered and with as much of the image showing as possible:

2. Fit

If we were to change the fill type to Fit at this point, the whole image will be shown in the container object, even if that means some of the object isn’t filled.

fit

3. Crop

The Crop fill type behaves similarly to the default Fill, but it gives you positioning tools to specify the crop yourself. As you can see below, you can scale and move the object like a window on the image:

crop figma

Another difference in behavior is that when you resize an object after applying the crop fill type, the image will scale with the object along both axes (effectively squashing and stretching the image).

resize crop

4. Tile

The last fill type is Tile, which repeats the image over and over again. This is best demonstrated with a repeatable tile image, like this:

tile fill figma

You can see that it repeats infinitely as the object is resized. And in the options you can determine the scale of the repeatable section too.

That’s All for Figma’s Fill Settings

And those are the various ways you can determine an object’s fill in Figma! I hope you enjoyed this quick guide, and don’t forget to check out our other Figma resources listed below.

Where are Pages Stored? The WordPress Database

$
0
0

Just where does WordPress store your pages and posts, and how does it access them?

Pages and posts are stored in the WordPress database. This is an essential part of how your WordPress site works. Without it, none of your pages or posts would be saved and they wouldn’t be displayed when someone visits them.

In this post, I’ll show you how the database in WordPress works and how WordPress builds a page from the database when a visitor comes to your site.

How WordPress Works—Database and Files

WordPress is a content management system (or CMS). This means that instead of creating a static HTML file for each page in your site, it uses a database to store all the content of those pages, and then uses code to access that content each time a page is loaded.

As well as the database, WordPress consists of two more elements:

  • The core files that run WordPress itself, which you install when you set up your site.
  • Any files you upload to the site, including theme and plugin files as well as media attachments.

WordPress uses all these to build the pages in your site without you having to write any code.

So let’s take more of a look at where your pages and posts are stored and how the database is structured.

Where Posts and Pages are Stored

All of the content in your site is stored in the database. This includes:

  • Your pages, posts and any posts of a custom post type (e.g. products if you’re running a store).
  • Data about attachments.
  • Any metadata such as post categories and tags (and custom taxonomies if you have them in your site), as well as custom fields and any metadata added by plugins.
  • Information on the attachments you’ve uploaded to your site, including the name of the file, and metadata such as alt text and a description, and information on which pages or posts art might be attached to.
  • Your settings, including overall site settings such as the site title and description, and more specific settings for your plugins and theme.
  • User data and settings.

There are twelve tables in the WordPress database, which you can see in this image from the WordPress Codex.

the WordPress database

Most of the tables are linked to each other, with wp_posts being the most important one:

  • wp_posts is where the content of your posts and pages is stored. Information on attachments is also stored in this table, as well as navigation menus and revisions.
  • wp_postmeta (linked to wp_posts) stores metadata about posts and pages.
  • wp_comments (linked to wp_users) stores all of the comments on your posts including who they were posted by and what point they were added to.
  • wp_commentmeta (linked to wp_comments) stores metadata about comments.
  • wp_terms (linked to wp_term_taxonomy) stores all the taxonomy terms in your site, including your categories and tags.
  • wp_term_taxonomy (linked to wp_terms and wp_term_relationships) stores the taxonomy for each term in the wp_terms table.
  • wp_term_relationships (linked to wp_terms_taxonomy and wp_posts) links your posts to the taxonomy terms that have been assigned to them.
  • wp_termmeta (linked to wp_terms) stores metadata on your taxonomy terms.
  • wp_users (linked to wp_posts and wp_comments) stores a list of all the users on your site and their username, password and other data.
  • wp_usermeta (linked to wp_users) stores metadata on your users.

The relationships between the tables link all of the data and ensures that for a given post, WordPress knows what taxonomy terms it has, who wrote it, what comments it has and more.

Two tables aren’t linked to the others and don’t have a relationship to your posts:

  • wp_options stores global options and settings for the whole site (not for a post, which would be stored in wp_postmeta).
  • wp_links is a hangover to the early days of blogging and stores the contents of the blogroll, a list of links. It’s rarely used these days.

So your posts and pages are stored in wp_posts but metadata about them is stored in other tables which are linked to them.

But how does WordPress translate all this data into pages on your site?

How WordPress Fetches Content for Your Pages

WordPress uses a specific piece of code called The Loop to fetch database content and output it in the pages of your site. This applies for single pages, archive pages, the home page and search results.

Watch out this short video to get a complete introduction to the loop.

The loop starts with this code:

This checks if there are any posts to be output on this page then while there are posts, uses the_post() template tag so that the posts’ content can be output.

Note that here, post doesn’t mean a blog post. A post in this context can mean any content type including a post, page, attachment or post of a custom post type. It can get confusing!

It ends with this code:

This ends the while loop from the beginning, meaning WordPress stops looping through posts when it’s found everything it needs for this page in the site. It then closes the if check and stops checking if there are any posts.

In between those two lines will be the code that outputs content. I’ll show you different versions of this for different content types shortly.

WordPress knows what content is relevant for the current page based on the kind of page that’s being visited. So for an archive page it will know what kind of archive page it is (a category archive, for example), and for a single post or page it will know which post or page is being output. It will use the correct template file from the theme (using the theme hierarchy) to output the relevant loop for the current content type.

Let’s take a look at this in action.

Single Posts and Pages

The loop for single posts and pages will only be run once, because only the content for one post or page needs to be shown. WordPress knows this because it knows what kind of page it’s showing in your site and will only fetch the current post or page.

The loop for a single post will look something like this:

This is a simplified version of the loop. In most themes it will also include more metadata, a list of categories, and comments. But it shows you how the core content of the post or page is output.

Everything is enclosed in an article element with an ID of the post ID and classes that are set using the post_class() template tag. There’s then a h1 element with the post title and a section for the content using the the_content() template tag.

All this is done automatically by accessing the database, meaning there’s only one file for all your single posts—the template file.

A loop for a page will look very similar and is less likely to have metadata and comments, but that will vary according to your theme.

Archive Pages

Archive pages also use the loop but instead of outputting just one post, they will fetch multiple posts and display them all. So for example a category archive will output all posts in that category.

Again, WordPress knows to do this based on the page that’s being displayed. This is where the while() part of the loop is more obvious because WordPress will keep going through the loop again and again while there are posts to display.

Here’s an example loop for a category archive:

There are a few key differences here compared to the single post or page:

  • The title is inside an h3 tag, not h2. This is because the title of the archive page will be in a h2 tag.
  • The title is inside a link to the post using the_permalink(). This means that a visitor can click through to the individual post from the archive page.
  • The featured image is being output as part of the archive page design. This is optional but will encourage more clicks through to the post. It’s also enclosed in a link to the post.
  • An excerpt of the post is output instead of the entire content. In some blogs, the entire content is output on archive pages but if you just use an excerpt, it will mean less scrolling for people to see all your posts in that archive.

There are differences, but as you can see, archives are using the loop just like single pages and posts—and they’re using it to access the database, fetch the content saved in the wp_posts table and output that.

The Home Page

The way the home page is displayed will depend on how you’ve set it up. Your home page can either be a list of your most recent posts, or it can be a static page. You can configure this in the Settings menu in the WordPress admin.

If your home page is a static page, then it will normally use the same template file as the other static pages in your site and the same version of the loop. This is unless your theme has a specific template file for the home page. Sometimes a template file like this will be used to fetch he contents of the page and output extra content such as a slider which is only on the home page. Either way, the loop will be like the loop we saw above for single pages.

If your home page is an archive of your latest posts, it won’t use the archive.php template file (annoyingly), but instead will use a template file specifically for the home page or, if there isn’t one, it will use the index.php file, which is the catch-all template file for any pages that don’t have a more specific template file.

It’ll work through the loop again and again, fetching and outputting probably the most recent posts in your site and showing either the excerpt or the full content. This depends on the code in your loop.

So whichever way your home page is set up, it’ll still be using the loop to access the database and fetch either the single stain page or the list of recent posts.

Summary

WordPress’s power comes from the fact that it’s a content management system. This means that to create a website, you don’t have to write any code. Instead, you create posts and pages in the WordPress admin screens and WordPress saves those to the database so they can be output on the relevant pages of your site so people can visit them.

This makes it much easier for you to create and manage your site and for the site to grow to include as much content as you need. Be sure to check out our learning guide if you want to learn more WordPress development.
