Three Quick Tips for Making Movie Websites
Now that you’ve seen some of the best movie themes ThemeForest has to offer, here are a few tips that will help you create a great website.
1. Use High-Quality Videos
As a movie website, you’re required to showcase the movie in the best way possible, and nothing says quality, like a high-resolution video, that will thrill your visitors.
2. Make It Branded With Your Colors and Fonts
There are a lot of similarities between a movie and a website, but perhaps the most apparent one is the brand and identity, so make sure you choose colors and fonts for your site that match the identity of the movie.
3. Experiment With Layouts
Don’t be afraid to think outside of the box, and most importantly don’t keep your website limited by the traditional design trends. Feel free to experiment, and with all the possibilities out there, you’ll find something that you love.
What are You Waiting For? Launch Your Movie Website With a WordPress Theme!
Now that you have all the tools you need, it’s just a matter of combining these tools with your vision to create something that will be your own little corner of the web.
If your WordPress website is going to be a success, then you need the right hosting provider! In this article, I'll tell you some pros and cons of hosting WordPress on AWS. Then I'll show you how to launch a website with Amazon Lightsail.
Choose the right provider, and you’ll enjoy faster loading times, improved SEO, and less downtime—plus, you’ll avoid many of the headaches associated with running a successful WordPress website.
There are countless WordPress hosting providers out there, but in this article we’ll be focusing on Amazon’s Lightsail. We’ll be exploring the benefits and drawbacks of choosing Amazon as your hosting provider, before showing you how to launch a website using Lightsail. Even if you have zero previous experience with Amazon Web Services (AWS), by the end of this article you’ll have configured and launched a WordPress website, using Amazon’s Lightsail.
And in case our pros and cons section leaves you questioning whether Lightsail is really the best option for your website, we’ll also be taking a look at an alternative hosting provider.
What Are Amazon Web Services (AWS)?
AWS is an on-demand cloud computing platform that provides access to large-scale cloud computing capacity, without you having to build your own physical server farm.
Although AWS is metered on a pay-as-you-go basis, subscription fees vary depending on your chosen hardware, software and networking features, as well as your availability, security and service requirements.
AWS is an umbrella term for hundreds of cloud computing services. In February 2020, Amazon was offering over 200 separate AWS products, with more products expected to be launched throughout the year.
Although there’s too many to cover in this article, some of the notable AWS products include:
Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3). Provides a computer data storage architecture that manages data as objects, making Amazon S3 ideal for backup and recovery, data archiving, and hybrid cloud storage. Amazon S3 uses the same scalable storage infrastructure as the Amazon.com website.
Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2). Provides access to a virtual cluster of computers that come with pre-loaded application software, including databases and web servers.
AWS Lambda. This is a serverless, event-driven computing platform that’s designed for building on-demand applications that run code in response to specific events. Lambda automatically manages the computing resources required to run your code, which makes it ideal for provisioning back-end services that are triggered in response to HTTP requests, and then automatically deprovisioning these resources when they’re no longer required.
For the purposes of this tutorial, we’ll be focusing on one AWS product in particular: Amazon Lightsail.
Getting Started With AWS: What Is Amazon Lightsail?
Lightsail is a cloud platform that provides everything you need to deploy and host your WordPress website, including instances, managed databases, static IP addresses, and load balancers. Although we’ll be focusing on using Lightsail to launch your WordPress instance, you can also use Lightsail to deploy small-scale web applications, business software, developer sandboxes, and testing environments.
Lightsail is very popular among WordPress users, but it isn’t the only choice for hosting a WordPress website. Before I show you how to install WordPress and launch your website on Amazon Lightsail, let’s make sure it’s the right platform for you, by examining its strengths and weaknesses.
Lightsail and WordPress: The Pros
Let’s start positive, and look at the reasons why you may want to opt for Lightsail over other WordPress hosting services.
1. It’s Beginner-Friendly
Lightsail is geared towards helping new users get started with AWS.
The Lightsail management console provides easy access to all the core AWS configuration options, so you can configure your server, your static IP addresses and DNS (Domain Name System) settings without any specialist assistance. If you’re an individual or small business who doesn’t have a system administrator on-hand, then you can easily use Lightsail to create, deploy and maintain a self-hosted WordPress website.
Using Lightsail, you can typically bring a host online within minutes, even if you have zero previous AWS experience.
2. It Has a Set Monthly Limit
With Lightsail, you pay an hourly rate for the resources you consume, up to a pre-arranged maximum monthly cost.
At the time of writing, Lightsail subscriptions ranged from $3.50-$240 per month, although plans that include a Windows Server license are noticeably higher than the comparable Linux and UNIX plans. In addition, any outbound data transfers that exceed your plan’s data transfer allowance, willbe subject to overage charges.
3. It’s Flexible
What happens if your website outgrows its Lightscale subscription? If you require more resources, then you can upgrade your RAM and storage capacity at any time, by migrating to a new Lightsail instance. Alternatively, if you need to cut costs or save resources, then you can switch to a smaller Lightsail instance.
Although migrations are supported, Lightsail doesn’t offer one-click migration. If you’re upgrading your Lightsail plan to a larger instance, then you’ll need to take a snapshot and then create a larger instance from this snapshot. If you’re migrating to a smaller instance then you’ll need to backup your data to an alternative AWS service, launch a smaller Lightsail instance, and then manually migrate all your data to this new instance.
Lightsail and WordPress: The Cons
While Lightsail has many positives, there are some drawbacks that make it unsuitable for certain use cases.
Could an alternative hosting platform be a better fit for your WordPress website?
In this section, we’ll explore some of the cons of opting for Amazon’s Lightsail platform.
1. It Doesn’t Auto-Scale
Although you can upgrade to a larger Lightscale instance at any time, Lightscale won’t spin up additional instances when certain criteria are met, and it won’t spin down resources when they’re no longer required.
If you’re building a personal website, or your site isn’t business-critical, then this lack of agility may not be a huge issue, however it does make Lightscale unsuitable for the enterprise, or websites that have fluctuating workloads.
If you require an enterprise-ready platform that auto-scales to meet your website’s demands, and can handle significant fluctuations in traffic, then you may want to look for an alternative platform.
2. You Need to Pay Extra for Technical Support
By default, all Lightsail users are entitled to the Basic Support package, which provides access to the official AWS documentation, whitepapers and support forms. This Basic Support package also includes 24x7 customer service, but it’s important to note that this isn’t technical support.
If you require technical support, then you’ll need to purchase a separate support package, which at the time of writing ranged from $29 per month to $15,000 per month.
Lightsail is straightforward to setup and maintain, so in theory you’re unlikely to require much technical assistance, but if you do encounter an issue then you’ll need to either purchase a dedicated support package, or deal with the problem yourself.
If your WordPress website is business-critical, or you plan to implement advanced or complex functionality, then you should either plan to purchase an additional support package, or opt for an alternative platform that provides technical support as standard.
Purchasing a Domain Name
The first step to launching a successful website, is to register a domain name.
As a general rule, you should opt for a domain name that’s easy to spell, pronounce and remember, includes keywords that are relevant to your website’s content, and doesn’t have any numbers or hyphens.
There are countless domain registrars to choose from, but some of the most popular include:
How to Host Your WordPress Website Using Amazon Lightsail
In this section, we’ll launch and configure a WordPress instance using Lightsail. By the end of this tutorial, your Lightsail instance and your WordPress website will be online, and open for business.
Sign Up for Amazon Web Services
To complete this tutorial, you’ll need an AWS account. If you don’t have an AWS account, then you can sign up for 12 months of Free Tier access, which includes a 30-day free trial of Amazon Lightsail.
Create Your WordPress Instance
To start, we need to create a WordPress instance in Lightsail:
Lightsail should detect your AWS Region and Availability Zone automatically, but you can change these values, if required.
Under Pick your instance image, choose Linux / Unix.
Under Select a blueprint, choose WordPress.
In Choose an instance plan, select the plan that you want to use; at the time of writing you could try Lightsail for free, for 30 days.
Give your Lightsail instance a unique name.
Click Create instance.
AWS will now create your Lightsail instance.
Amazon’s SSH Client: Retrieving Your WordPress Password
In this section, you’ll connect to your instance using the browser-based SSH client that’s included as part of the Lightsail console. We’ll then use this client to retrieve the password you’ll use to log into your WordPress account:
Find the instance that you just created and click its accompanying SSH quick-connect icon. The browser-based SSH client will now launch in a new window.
In the SSH window, type the following command and press Enter.
cat $HOME/bitnami_application_password
The SSH client will now display the password you’ll need to log into your WordPress dashboard; make a note of this password, as you’ll be needing it shortly.
Log Into the WordPress Admin Dashboard
To access WordPress, you’ll need the public IP address of your WordPress instance.
In the Lightsail console, select the Instances tab; you should see a card representing your WordPress instance.
The public IP address will be displayed in the card’s bottom-right corner.
In a new tab, enter the following URL, making sure to replace publicIP with the public IP address you retrieved from the Lightsail console:
You should now see the standard WordPress login screen.
You can now log into your account using the email address associated with your AWS account and the password you retrieved from the SSH client.
Create a Static IP Address
By default, the public IP attached to your Lightsail instance will change every time you stop and restart your instance, which means you’ll need to constantly update your domain’s DNS records.
In this section, I’ll show you how to create a static IP address and attach it to your WordPress instance, so you don’t have to worry about updating your DNS records:
Find Enter the domain you have registered, and enter your domain name.
Select Create DNS zone.
The Lightsail console will now display several name server addresses.
To transfer management of your DNS records to Lightsail, you’ll need to add these name server addresses to your domain name’s registrar, so either make a note of these addresses or leave this page open in a separate tab.
Switch to Lightsail’s Name Servers
Now, you need to sign into your DNS hosting provider’s website, and replace the default name servers with Lightsail’s name servers.
This process can vary, so check your provider’s official documentation or blog for more information. To give you an idea of the steps involved, here’s how I changed the name serves for my GoDaddy account:
Copy/paste Lightsail’s name servers into the GoDaddy console, and then click Save.
Mapping the Root of Your Domain
Now, you need to map the root of your domain to your Lightsail instance:
If you don’t already have the Networking screen open, then navigate to Lightsail Console> Networking and select your WordPress instance.
In the DNS records section, click Add record.
In the Subdomain box, enter the @character, as this signifies that you’re mapping the root of your domain, and not a subdomain.
Select the Resolves to box, and in the subsequent dropdown choose the static IP address that you attached to this WordPress instance.
Save your changes by clicking the green checkmark.
You may need to wait while the name server propagates through the Internet’s DNS, so this change may not be instant. However, in the Lightsail console’s Instances tab, there should now be a blue pin next to your instance’s IP address, which indicates this is now a static IP address.
You’re Ready to Build Your WordPress Website!
Now, head over to the domain name you purchased earlier, and you should see the standard Hello World WordPress website.
To start working on your site, enter your domain with a wp-login.php suffix, for example if you purchased the domain name my-example-website.co.uk then you’d use the following:
You can now log into your account using your email address and password, and start working on your WordPress website.
Don’t Want to Use Amazon Lightsail? Seven Reasons to Host With SiteGround Instead

The prospect of migrating your entire website can be daunting, but SiteGround’s Migrator plugin lets you securely migrate all your content, while keeping your WordPress configuration intact.
Conclusion
In this article, we looked at the pros and cons of hosting your website with Lightsail. We also saw exactly how to install, configure and launch a WordPress website using Amazon’s cloud platform.
Using Lightsail, you can create a website even if you have zero previous AWS experience. However, there’s no such thing as a one-size-fits-all hosting provider, so there are some drawbacks that mean Lightsail may not be the best choice for your particular website.
If Lightsail doesn’t meet all your requirements, or you simply don’t want to use an AWS product, then we explored SiteGround as a possible alternative.
Have you launched a WordPress website using either Lightsail or SiteGround? We’d love to hear about your experiences, so be sure to share them in the comments below!

Podcast advertising has turned out to be a lucrative business, with U.S. advertising spend set to reach an eye-watering $659 million in 2020.
If there’s a “podcasting bubble”, it’s not going to burst anytime soon.
“32% of Americans (approx. 150 million people) listen to podcasts at least once a month (though many listen to one podcast or another much more frequently than that).” – musicoomph.com
With so many new podcasts out there, you need more than a microphone and an RSS feed to launch your show into audio fame. Most importantly, you need a home base for your listeners to find your content: you need a website.
Making a website can seem like a daunting task, especially when you’re focusing your skills on audio production. By building your site on WordPress, you’ll have a super-customizable website that has the functionality to embed audio and create playlists, putting the listening experience first. Plus, you’ll have the flexibility to grow your website with your show by launching an online store, selling tickets for live events, featuring videos, collecting emails for your newsletter, and more.

This homepage is a strong, full-page welcome to Vipo; a podcast and vlog WordPress theme perfectly suited to publishing your video or audio casts. Vipo gives you control over your own content, offering listener statistics, podcast transcripts, RSS2 feed generation and more.
Vipo - Audio / Video Podcast & Vlog WordPress Theme
This WordPress podcast theme is specifically designed with podcasters in mind, so it’s simple and audio-focused. The most recent episode can be featured at the top of the home page, with an embedded media player at the very top, so your listeners can listen and subscribe as soon as they land on the home page.
Saying that, there’s a huge number of homepage layouts to choose from, including this dark variant:
The podcast episodes are organized as their own category, making it easy to create an episode archive. It’s all based on blog post format, so you can add show notes, videos, quotes, or other media. There are several color scheme options, but I’m partial to the yellow version, which reminds me of the (very well-designed) website for Radiotopia’s popular design podcast, 99% Invisible.
Castilo is one to keep an eye on; it’s already racked up a solid number of sales and a near-perfect 4.7 star rating. Castilo offers all that you’d need from a WordPress podcast theme–stylish presentation, integration with popular audio platforms, social channels for listeners to follow, and as an admin it offers very thorough statistics about total listens, listeners and listening sources.
Keep track of how many listeners use the site’s audio player, iTunes, Stitcher, Google Play, direct downloads and other sources.
Sonus pitches itself as more than just a WordPress theme; it’s a podcast publishing platform. Upload your audio, create a post, organize with seasons and episodes, then publish!
Make use of the sticky (and customizable) audio player at the foot of each page. Or publish using one of the supported plugins instead (PowerPress Podcasting plugin, Seriously Simple Podcasting, Podlove Podcast Publisher, and others).
The second WordPress podcast theme from designer ProgressionStudios on our list, the Viseo theme integrates news, comments, and video. It comes with a premium plugin called Boosted Elements, which enables functions like sliders, pop-ups, and maps.
This WordPress theme is SEO-optimized and translation-ready. I like the trendy, Spotify-style gradients in the demo version, but if you don’t, it’s fully customizable.
If you already have an RSS feed or hosting on a podcasting service, this theme will be easy to launch–there’s a built-in migration tool that transfers the feed to the website. It’s mobile-ready, works with WooCommerce, and is super-fast (with load times faster than 95% of all tested websites).
Castpod - A Professional WordPress Theme for Audio Podcasts
The coolest feature of WordPress podcast theme Audioatro is the audio visualizer, which adds a visual component to playback–check out the demo of this here. It’s a unique way to make audio more visual.
This theme also has video pages, Mailchimp integration, social sharing buttons, and is mobile-friendly.
This theme supports playlists and podcast archives, and it’s made to work with oEmbed. With events, contact forms, video, and social media integration, this WordPress theme has all the features you might need for your podcast website.
Do you have a live show or a radio station? This theme will let you create a website for your radio station, integrating with all major providers (like ShoutCAST, IceCAST, Radio.co, and Airtime). There’s a nonstop music player, a schedule, sponsors, and more; plus space for blogging and stories.
As one user says, “our station has thousands of visitors and this theme is perfect for the performance and usability”. Tried and tested!
National Public Radio (NPR) is one of the biggest names in podcasts. They organize their podcasts with a directory page, which keeps their programs organized and easy to find–which is useful, with nearly 50 podcasts in their directory!
If you have more than one podcast, or just a lot of content to organize, take a page from NPR’s book and build your site with a directory theme. MyListing is a particularly well-designed theme, with card set-up, advanced filtering, events, and more.

Using Multipurpose Themes as Podcast Website Themes
Time to think outside the box–a WordPress podcast theme doesn’t actually have to have the word “podcast” in the title to be a good fit for your show! Most feature-rich website templates come with audio embed capabilities, so even if it’s not specifically marked as a “podcaster” theme, you’ll be able to play your show on your site.
In fact, with so many podcast creators doing more than just podcasts–like Gimlet Media’s launch of a film and TV division–it might be a good idea to plan for the potential growth of your (multi)media empire. Here are some WordPress themes that aren’t designed specifically for podcasts, but that would be great for a podcast website.
MagPlus is a super-popular theme with an incredibly robust feature list. It’s made with Visual Composer and has 40+ templates–like getting forty themes for the price of one. With 150+ elements like sliders, galleries, and different article layouts, you can create nearly any website you can imagine.
If you need some direction, check out their Podcast Pro demo (pictured below).
One of my favorite podcasts is The Memory Palace. It’s a show that’s hyper-focused on quality writing, and the website reflects that. There’s no fancy sliders, flashy images, or other distracting content.
If you have a podcast that’s focused on the writing or show notes, consider using a stripped-down WordPress theme, like Writing. Although text is the focus here, you can still embed audio into each post.
A fresh, clean theme with a pastel color palette. There are fifteen demos, including a “coming soon” template that would work well for a to-be-launched show.
Business and entrepreneurship podcasts are some of the most popular podcast categories. If your business falls into this category, you need a modern, tech-focused look for your site.
Startit is built with the startup work in mind. It’s SEO-friendly, has MailChimp integration, and fresh animations, earning it the title of the “best-selling tech theme on Themeforest”.

5 Quick Tips for Interior Design Websites
An attractive interior design theme is only the first step in creating your website. Here are a few more tips that will help you create a standout website for your interior design agency.
1. Include a Portfolio
Clients looking to hire an interior designer will be interested in your styling portfolio. After all, they want to know that your aesthetic matches theirs. As such, be sure to include a portfolio on your interior design website.
2. Don’t Forget Testimonials and Press
Your website should also include testimonials from past clients as well as links to any press mentions and features. This will help build trust with potential clients and they will be more likely to hire you.
3. Make it Easy to Get in Touch
Make it easy for potential clients to get in touch with you. Include your contact page in the main navigation and don’t forget to include calls to action throughout your website that point visitors to your contact form.
4. Be Specific With Services You Provide
Keep in mind that people won’t always be looking for a full-blown home makeover. Sometimes, they will need specialized services like a kitchen or bathroom remodeling. As such, be sure to list all the services you provide on your website.
5. Optimize for Local SEO
This will help you get found when someone searches for a local interior design company. You can do this by creating a Google My Business profile and linking your website to it.
You can also improve your site’s SEO by installing an SEO plugin that will give you recommendations for optimizing your content. All you have to do then is make sure each post and page is optimized for the keywords you want to rank for.

Welcome to the WordPress Secure Setup Guide. In this tutorial, I’ll show you a number of ways to secure the WordPress admin area. Before I show you these, consider whether the WordPress site has an SSL certificate.
An SSL connection helps secure any website and is recommended, especially for use on WordPress sites.
This video is part of my course WordPress Secure Setup Guide. You can watch the entire course for free here on Envato Tuts+.
SSL stands for Secure Socket Layer. Essentially, it’s what makes the difference between HTTP and HTTPS when serving a website from a server. The S denotes that the connection is secure.
If you don't already have SSL set up on a WordPress installation, contact the web host, they’ll tell you what you need to do.
When you have the SSL certificate set up and running on your site, the URL that you'll use for your site will go from HTTP to HTTPS.
Now that you know S stands for secure, when you see HTTPS in the URL, you can be confident that you're browsing in a secure connection.
Forcing SSL Using wp-config
Forcing SSL Using wp-config
A wise step to take is to activate a feature in WordPress that forces the connection to go over HTTPS whenever somebody is logging in and whenever they're in the admin area so that there's no unsecured access.
The way to do this is by copying a little snippet of code to the the wp-config.php file. Copy the following line of code:
define('FORCE_SSL_ADMIN', true);
Now scroll all the way down to the bottom of your wp-config.php file, after the WP_DEBUG line here, pasting the code snippet in.
Once that code has been added, the only way to access the admin area will be through a secure connection.
The next thing to consider is changing the location of the login page. If you look in the URL bar, you’ll see this login page is at wp-login.php. This is the default for all WordPress websites.
Change the Name of wp-login
Change the Name of WP-Login
You’ll recall that brute force attacks may be used to hack their way into the WordPress admin area. Part of that automated process is to examine the domain name. The attack just adds wp-login.php to the end of it. Then, if a login page is found, the script knows exactly where the WordPress login page is, and it will begin the brute force attack.
One way of preventing such an automated brute-force attack is to change the name of the login page to something non-default, thus changing the URL.
Again, this is achieved using a plugin.
Searching for a plugin
In the WordPress admin panel, navigate to Plugins > Add New then search for Rename wp-login.
There are actually several different plugins that you may use to rename the login area, so feel free to have a browse through and choose the one that you prefer.
Or you can just go with Rename wp-login We'll install that and activate it. Once activated, you’ll be taken straight a settings page where you can rename the login area. You may leave it as login, or you may come up with something a little more obscure.
This is known as security by obscurity.
And if you do go with something a bit more obscure, then ensure you bookmark the new login page so that you don't accidentally lose it.
In this example, I’ll leave it as login, and save the changes. So now if I log in, the URL will say login, not wp-login.php.
Recovering WordPress if You Get Locked Out
On that note, if you ever install a plugin for security and then accidentally lock yourself out, go to the File Manager or FTP client. Navigate to the Plugins folder, in the WordPress installation, then rename the folder for that plugin.
That has the effect of deactivating the plugin, in turn removing whatever mechanism is locking you out. Then you can get yourself back into the WordPress admin area and correct the issue.
Limit the Number of Unsuccessful Login Attempts
WordFence
Another good security measure is to limit the number of unsuccessful login attempts a person may make. Generally speaking, a valid user is only going to forget their password a few times before they reset it or they remember it.
If, however, there's a single IP address making many login attempts, that's an indication that somebody trying to hack their way into the site.
The way to counter this is by setting a maximum number of login attempts. If you set it to five, then after five incorrect attempts to log in, a user would be temporarily locked out. And you may set how long to lock them out for, say five minutes or 20 minutes. That would usually be enough to interrupt a brute force attack.
Once again, there’s a couple of different plugins that you can use for this. I’m using the functionality that’s included in one of the most popular security plugins for WordPress, Wordfence.
Install and activate Wordfence in the usual way and navigate to the lower left of the WordPress menu to find the Wordfence menu. Select Options.
Wordfence does a number of things, many of which I’ll show you in another tutorial. For now, I’m focusing on limiting the login attempts. So scroll down to the Login Security Options section.
Here, you may configure:
the number of login attempts a person may make
how many times they may forget their password
the period of time that you'll allow those attempts to occur within
how long you want have that person locked out
Well, I say a person, but this won’t actually affect people as much as it will affect automatic login attempts. And that’s the point.
Generally speaking, you can probably leave the settings at the default values. Pay attention to the activity on the site to see if there are brute force attacks being made.
Lock Out Invalid User Names
Locking Out Invalid User Names
If you're the only person using the site, you may set rules to be as strict as you want. If, however, you have a business website where you have customers as members on your site, then you’ll need to consider the customer service side of things.
For example, I had a website where all of my customers needed to be able to log-in to the back-end in order to access products that they had purchased from me. At the same time, I experienced a relentless series of brute force attacks that went on for years, non-stop, 24/7.
So, in order to protect the data of my customers, I had to make the call to make these rules very strict.
One of the things that I activated was this option here to immediately lock out invalid usernames. Because, my logic was, sometimes you forget your password but, generally speaking, you're less likely to forget your own username.
Now if you do find yourself in a situation where you have to do this, just have some type of customer service process ready because when people get locked out, they may get a bit irritated.
Ensure that you provide an easy way for locked-out customers to contact you and let you know that they've been locked out. Then explain to them that the reason that you're doing it is to protect their information. Once they know that, they'll always be happy; the irritation will disappear!
And if anything, you have an opportunity to build greater trust with your customers because they know that you're looking out for their privacy and security.
Now one great feature that this area also includes is you can see here. It says prevent users registering admin username if it doesn't exist. And you already know why you don't want to have an admin username on your site. But you can also add extra usernames that you don't want to allow on the site.
So you might add wp-admin, you might add your full name to make sure that nobody can use that. And that just gives you extra ways to try to prevent these brute force login attempts.
Another thing that you should be aware of. If you have customers that need to log in to your site and you limited the number of login attempts that they can make. Is the Alerts section at the top of these options. So here, you can get an alert whenever somebody's IP address is blocked.
Now, of course, you get to know customers over time, so if you see that someone who's been locked out is a trusted member you can be a bit proactive. You may unblock them and let them know that they're able to log in again.
Unblocking IP Addresses
Blocking IP Addresses
If somebody contacts you, who has been locked out, and they are legitimate user, then go to the Wordfence menu, and go to Blocked IPs.
Here, you'll see IP addresses that are blocked out from login. You’ll be able to identify the person who's been blocked and remove that block. Or you can just choose Clear all locked out IP addresses if you feel that it's safe to do so.
Limiting WordPress Admin to an IP Address
Limiting WordPress Admin to an IP Address
Allowing only specific IP addresses to have access to the WordPress admin area as another good security precaution.
This is something you can do if only you and a handful of other people are accessing the site. And you’ll all need to have a static IP address. That is to say an IP addresses that doesn't change over time but which stays the same.
If these circumstances are satisfied, then follow the WordPress Codex instructions on how to modify the .htaccess file so that it only allows certain IP addresses to access the admin area. .htaccess is found in the root folder of your site.
Now I'm not going through exactly what you have to do here because this does get a little technical. You’ll need to know whether the server is an Apache server or an Nginx server. If you don't feel confident with that, then you probably don't want to attempt this technique. But if you do, then you'll find a link, in the notes below this tutorial, on the process to follow.
Again, this is done by editing the .htaccess file in the root folder of the website. This security measure creates a popup that prompts for a username and password—not the password to your WordPress site but a different one. And this functionality is completely separate from WordPress. Only once you successfully log in through this popup can you even access the login page.
If you're dealing with brute force attacks, and you don't have to allow public access to the admin area for your customers, then this is a really great option.
Just a quick note, though. If you’ve renamed the login area, ensure that you don't leave wp-login.php in here, which is the default address of your login area. Ensure you update so that it's protecting the correct location for the login page.
CAPTCHA Code
Captcha Code plugin
Another technique is to add a CAPTCHA code to login pages. Again, this is achieved with a plugin so navigate to Plugins > Add New.
There are several different CAPTCHA plugins, and you can use any one that you like. One of my favorites, though, is SI CAPTCHA Anti-Spam. So I’ve installed that and activated it.
Go to Settings, scroll down and this is where to set up a CAPTCHA code for the registration form, for the lost password form and for the comment form. You do have the option to activate it on the login form, as well, as that one is not enabled by default.
Once again, if you are having trouble and you really need to clamp down on brute force attacks, you may enable this.
Once enabled, you’ll have a CAPTCHA code here and it won’t be possible to log in without getting that code correct.
Two-Factor Authentication in WordPress
Two Factor Authentication in WordPress
The last technique to protect the WordPress admin area is two-factor authentication, also known as two-step authentication.
You're probably familiar with this from personal use of this security technique.
The two-step basically refers to needing two things in order to get in. Normally something you have and something you know.
You have your username and password—something you know—and one method is to text a security code to a mobile phone—something you have.
Wordfence does have functionality built in for this. If you go to Wordfence > Cellphone Sign-in. This, however, is something that you’ll need to pay for in order to enable.
That wraps up the list of top techniques for securing the WordPress admin area. I’ve done quite a lot so far to secure the WordPress site, but there are still other things that can be done.
In the next lesson of this free course, I’ll show you some additional security methods to implement.

5 Must-Have Features of Medical Websites
If you want to attract as many patients as possible to your site and encourage them to book an appointment, there are a few features that your site needs. But before we list some practical features, let’s quickly consider the work of designer Eric Meyer whose six year old daughter very sadly died back in 2014.
What he and his wife experienced during that time gave cause for Eric to think about “designing for crisis”, thinking about users who may be under serious levels of stress when using a website. Someone in crisis may seem like too much of an edge case to consider during the design process, but the impact of a poorly designed website in that situation can be serious.
“We’re not trained to take crisis situations into account when we design. It’s human nature to look away from difficulty, to avoid pain.” – Eric Meyer
Health and medical websites are perhaps the best example of commonly used services where the users might be right in the middle of a crisis. When creating your own medical website be sure you take those users into account.
A booking form will make it possible for anyone who comes to your site to make an appointment online. This minimizes the need to have patients book on the phone and allows you to schedule and see more patients during your workday.
2. List of Services or Practice Areas
Listing your services is necessary, so visitors know immediately if you’re the right specialist for their needs. Themes like One Life Medical do a great job of allowing you to present your practice areas without overwhelming or confusing visitors.
Choose a theme that has the ability to display testimonials from past patients as that increases visitor trust and your credibility. Consider a theme like Medicare for its ease of use, colorful design, and the testimonials feature.
Gain more confidence from potential patients with the testimonial feature from the Medicare theme.
4. Responsive and Attractive Design
It goes without saying that one of the key features is responsive and attractive design. This will ensure that visitors on mobile devices can access and use your site without any issues while an attractive design will help you stand out from the competition. You may feel that one of the free WordPress themes for doctors is a good fit for your needs, but typically you’ll only get a high-quality look from a professionally designed premium theme.
Medicenter is a theme that puts responsive design first.
5. SEO-Optimized Code and Content
Lastly, you’ll want to opt for a theme that has been optimized for SEO. SEO optimization is like the medical cure for underperforming health and medical WordPress themes. Optimization will increase the visibility of your website in search engines and bring you more traffic.

In today’s super quick tutorial, we’ll learn how to build a simple, yet useful scroll effect. As we scroll within the page, the visibility of two elements will change depending on the scroll position.
As the saying goes: “a picture is worth a thousand words”, so let’s have a look at what we’re going to create (scroll down to see the effect):
1. Begin With the Page Markup
Similarly to the previous tutorial, we’ll define a section with a heading and a fullscreen div wrapper. The wrapper will include two empty divs. Both elements will have a background image. The last element will receive the front class.
As already discussed, the wrapper element will cover the full viewport height. Also, its children will be stacked on top of one another. By default, the last element will appear.
As we start scrolling down, the .front element will gradually fade out and its sibling element will appear. Conversely, as we start scrolling up, the .front element will gradually fade in and thus sit on top of its sibling.
To accomplish this, we’ll first store in the checkpoint variable a number (change it according to your needs) which will determine after how many pixels the .front element should disappear. Then, we’ll listen for the scroll event and perform the following actions inside its callback:
Keep track of how much a user has scrolled vertically.
If the amount of their scrolling is less than the target number, the .front element will gradually become hidden or visible depending on the scrolling direction. Otherwise, for safety, we’ll set its opacity to 0.
Done! With just a few lines of code, we managed to create an interesting scroll effect that you can try, especially on the hero sections of your pages.
Hopefully, you enjoyed this small exercise and have taken inspiration for building something similar in an upcoming project. As a quick idea, instead of having two different images, you can combine this demo with the one from the previous tutorial and reveal the colored image.
As always, thanks a lot for reading!

Creating a responsive dropdown menu is a tricky task. There are many decisions you have to make, in both the design and development phases. Recommended solutions usually depend on the characteristics of the website or application you’re building. However, there are also some general best practices that are recommended for all types of responsive dropdown menus.
I collected these best practices while writing my how to build a responsive navigation bar with flexbox tutorial. As it’s more of a hands-on tutorial, I didn’t have much space to explain what design and development decisions had to be made—so here you are. These recommendations are not just for flexbox menus but any kind of responsive dropdowns.
Although it might seem easier to design a menu first for desktop screens then adapt it to smaller viewports, this is usually not the case—especially if your menu has a dropdown submenu.
If you design the menu for desktop first, it can quickly get complicated and you can end up with a very long menu on mobile that users just keep scrolling and scrolling without ever reaching the end!
Solution
You can implement mobile-first design by using min-width media queries instead of max-width ones:
@media all and (min-width: 960px) {
// ...
}
With min-width media queries, the mobile design will be the default and you’ll add rules by moving up first to tablet, then to desktop screens (or, in some cases, you don’t even need a separate design for tablet).
This is also important from a performance point of view. If you use mobile-first design, smartphones (frequently accessing your site over a metered data connection or patchy wifi) have to evaluate fewer style rules, as they can skip over the media query blocks.
In many cases, you may want to show menu and submenu items in a different order on mobile, tablet, and desktop screens, but want to keep the HTML outline logical and accessible.
Solution
With the order property, you can change the visual order of menu items while keeping the DOM unchanged.
As a rule of thumb, menu items in the HTML outline should follow an order that’s the best for users of screen readers and other assistive technologies. Don’t forget that search engine bots are also similar to screen readers in the sense that they only see the HTML outline but not the visual order.
Here’s an example of a menu consisting of call-to-action buttons and menu links. We want the call-to-actions (CTAs) to appear at the beginning of the menu on mobile and tablet and at the end of the menu on desktop. In the HTML, menu links will come first (however, this is not a must, as in some cases, you might want to put the call-to-action buttons first for screen reader users).
<nav><ul><li class="mlink">Menu Link 1</li><li class="mlink">Menu Link 2</li><li class="mlink">Menu Link 3</li><li class="cta">CTA 1</li><li class="cta">CTA 2</li> </ul></nav>
As the default value of order is 0, you don’t have to change it for the first element. For the second element in the visual order, its value will be 1. For the third one, it will be 2, and so on. Note that order can also take negative values. So, the CSS will look as follows:
ul {
display: flex;
}
.mlink {
order: 1;
}
@media all and (min-width: 960px) {
.mlink {
order: 0;
}
}
Note: the order property works only with the flexbox and CSS grid layouts, so if you want to use it you need to add either display: flex; or display: grid; to the parent menu item.
On desktop, the submenu is usually activated using the :hover pseudo-class. When users hover the parent menu item, the associated submenu pops up on the screen. When they move their mouse away, the submenu disappears. However, there’s no :hover on mobile, tablet, and other touch devices.
Solution
By using JavaScript event listeners, you can open and close the submenu whenever the user clicks/touches the parent menu item. The addEventListener() method is part of the DOM API and built into every modern browser up from IE9.
The following code example is from my flexbox menu tutorial mentioned above, and it adds or removes the .submenu-active class whenever the user clicks the parent menu item. The display styles of .submenu-active can be added with CSS.
/* Activate Submenu */
function toggleItem() {
if (this.classList.contains("submenu-active")) {
this.classList.remove("submenu-active");
} else if (menu.querySelector(".submenu-active")) {
menu.querySelector(".submenu-active").classList.remove("submenu-active");
this.classList.add("submenu-active");
} else {
this.classList.add("submenu-active");
}
}
/* Event listeners */
for (let item of items) {
if (item.querySelector(".submenu")) {
item.addEventListener("click", toggleItem, false);
}
}
The for...of loop loops through all the menu items, then the if block picks those that have a submenu and adds a click event listener to them. The custom toggleItem() function is called whenever the user clicks/taps a menu item with a submenu.
There are many events in the DOM API that you can target with event listeners. For touch devices, click and touchstart are the most frequently used ones. Above, we have used click as it works for both click and touch, while touchstart only works for touch but not click.
Note: you can target only one event type with the addEventListener() method. This is an important difference compared to jQuery where you can add more than one event to the on() method used for event listeners.
4. Choose Between Click and Hover on Desktop
Problem
Now that your submenu works on mobile and tablet devices, here’s another problem: on desktop, you may want to enable users to display the submenu on hover instead of click. However, if you have already added the click event listener to show the submenu on touch devices, the desktop menu will react to both click and hover.
The two user actions can easily interfere with each other, which can lead to confusion or, in some cases, even break the layout of the menu.
Solution
On desktop viewports, you need to decide if the submenu will be shown on hover or click. Generally, I’d say that if you’re building a web app, choose click, as that’s the behaviour most web app users will be looking for. And, if you’re building a website, choose hover, as it feels more natural on a website.
If You Choose Click
If you decide to keep the click event handler for desktop, there’s a small UX issue to fix. When the user navigates away from the menu area, the submenu will not close itself (which would be the normal behaviour on hover). To close the submenu, the user will have to navigate back to the parent menu item and click it again, which is not the ideal user experience.
To fix this issue, you can use the following script that lets the user close the submenu by clicking anywhere on the page.
/* Close Submenu From Anywhere */
function closeSubmenu(e) {
let isClickInside = menu.contains(e.target);
if (!isClickInside && menu.querySelector(".submenu-active")) {
menu.querySelector(".submenu-active").classList.remove("submenu-active");
}
}
/* Event listener */
document.addEventListener("click", closeSubmenu, false);
It adds an event listener to the document object and removes the .submenu-active class whenever a click happens inside of the document, but outside of the menu area.
If You Choose Hover
If you choose hover, you’ll need to detect the viewport size with JavaScript and add an extra if statement to the event listener to check if the viewport’s width is smaller than the media query breakpoint. You can use the clientWidth property of the document object to detect the viewport’s width (excluding any scrollbar).
So, in the code above, the event listener loop that calls the custom toggleItem() function will change as follows:
if (document.documentElement.clientWidth < 960) {
for (let item of items) {
if (item.querySelector(".submenu")) {
item.addEventListener("click", toggleItem, false);
}
}
}
In the CSS, you’ll need to add the rules responsible for the submenu layout on desktop to the :hover pseudo-class.
5. Use the <a> Tag Without the href Attribute for Empty Parent Menu Items
Problem
Many times, parent menu items only serve for opening and closing the belonging submenu, but they don’t link to anywhere. However, if you want to keep the HTML outline consistent and the CSS stylesheet simple, you’ll need to add the <a href="#"> anchor tag to these “empty” menu items as well.
In that case, however, when the user clicks the parent menu item to open or close the submenu, the page will reload and jump up to the top on mobile devices. This is especially bad if you have a long menu.
Solution
A frequent solution to this problem is adding the "javascript: void(0);" value to the href attribute. However, this is considered a bad practice, as it uses a pseudo URL that returns undefined as value that can result in different errors and unexpected behaviour.
The easiest way to handle this problem is using the <a> tag without a href attribute for these empty menu items, which is a valid solution, as href is not a required attribute. According to the W3C docs:
“The href attribute on a andarea elements is not required; when those elements do not have href attributes they do not create hyperlinks.”
However, there are two problems with empty <a> tags:
They are not keyboard accessible, as they are omitted from the default tab order. You can solve this by adding the tabindex="0" attribute to each <a> tag that doesn’t have a href attribute.
Even if empty <a> elements are included in the tab order, users can’t open/close the associated submenu by hitting Enter on their keyboard. This can be solved by creating an event listener for the keypress event.
For the event listener, you can use the same custom toggleItem() function we created for opening/closing the submenu. You just have to add a keypress event listener to the above for...of loop in the following way:
for (let item of items) {
if ( item.querySelector(".submenu")) {
item.addEventListener("click", toggleItem, false);
item.addEventListener("keypress", toggleItem, false);
}
}
6. Make Icons Available Offline
Problem
If you use online icon font libraries such as Font Awesome to add icons to the dropdown submenus, such as the frequently used down arrow, the icons will disappear when the website/app is accessed offline. Note that offline availability is also an accessibility issue.
Solution
The solution is relatively easy for this problem. Instead of loading icon libraries from a CDN, you can also load them locally. For instance, here’s how you can host Font Awesome yourself. If you only load the parts of the libraries that you do use on your site, you might even save on page load—even though this also depends on how the particular icon library is structured.
That’s It for Responsive Dropdown Menu Best Practices!
Building a responsive dropdown submenu is seemingly easy, however, there are many details you need to pay attention to. It needs to work on different devices, properly react to different events, be accessible to keyboard users, be available offline, and more.
If you think through the use cases your website or application will be typically accessed, it will be easier to decide how to address all the issues that can arise when users will be trying to use your submenu.

Agencies and the Rise of “In-Housing”
With many companies investing in their own in-house capabilities, creative agencies of all kinds are having to step up their game. Becoming more efficient and reducing costs are the driving forces behind the move in-house, partly due to the sheer volume of marketing, creative work, and development needed in today’s markets.
“As part of [our] overall agency reinvention, we’re discerning between what work we should do versus what work an agency should do or any kind of supplier,” – Marc Pritchard, P&G
But that isn’t to say agencies are a thing of the past; far from it. Whether in advertising, design, marketing, or whichever area, opportunities are there for the hungriest agencies to take. In fact, AdWeek noticed in their most recent Fastest Growing Agencies list an average growth of over 300%.
“[this] points to talented, dedicated individuals and teams that ignore the noise around them to focus on what they do best: delivering big time for their clients and brands.” — Doug Zanger, AdWeek
All of which highlights the importance of a sound agency website. A professional website makes it easy to attract new clients and show them that you take care of the manner in which you present your skills and past work. This in turn suggests you will take equally good care of their project. It puts your entire brand into a favorable position; the kind of quality positioning that creative agencies strive for.

5 Quick, Creative Agency Design Tips
Before clicking away to purchase your chosen theme, here are a few tips to keep in mind when it comes to designing your creative agency website:
Keep It Responsive: Responsive design has never been more important than today when most of us use tablets and phones to browse the Internet. All of the themes on our list feature responsive design but you can always go a step further and ensure the theme is also optimized for speed like in the case of Fevr or GridStack.
Include Testimonials: Testimonials work wonders for building credibility and social proof so consider choosing a theme like Comet or Stag.
Make It Easy to Contact You: Aside from a contact form, why not include your social media profiles (and those of your employees) to make it extremely easy for potential clients to get in touch with you? They may not be ready to contact you right now, but if you give them the option to follow you on social media, you ensure that they know how to reach out to you in the future—even if they don’t remember your email.
Add Visual Appeal With Icons: Highlight different sections of your website with icons to make them stand out and differentiate them from other sections. Consider a theme like Uncode which includes more than a 1000 icons.
Make Your Portfolio Sortable: A sortable portfolio like the one found in the Yin and Yang theme makes it easy for potential clients to find examples of past work that are relevant to their project.

Time for a practical exercise in flexbox! In this tutorial we will use flexbox to create a mobile-first, responsive, toggleable navigation bar with different layouts for mobile, tablet, and desktop screens.
Note: This tutorial has been updated to include a responsive submenu and pure JavaScript instead of jQuery.
Flexbox is Perfect for Responsive Navigation
Flexbox is a versatile layout module with which we can create one-dimensional layouts that require flexibility, such as responsive menus. Using flexbox’s ordering, alignment, and sizing properties, we can build navigation bars that adapt their layouts to the viewport size while keeping the HTML outline logical and accessible.
In this tutorial, we’ll look into how to create a responsive navigation bar with flexbox. Our flexbox navigation will have three different layouts, depending on the viewport size:
a mobile layout in which only the logo and a toggle button will be visible by default and users can open and close the menu using the toggle,
a tablet layout in which we will show two call-to-action buttons between the logo and toggle in the default state and the rest of the menu will remain toggleable,
a desktop layout in which all the menu items, except for the toggle button, will be visible on the screen.
We will use media queries to detect the viewport size of the user’s browser. Our responsive navigation bar will be mobile-first, so we will create the mobile layout first. Then, we will add the tablet- and desktop-specific CSS using min-width media queries.
The navigation bar will also have a JavaScript-based dropdown submenu that opens and closes when the user clicks the parent menu item.
Here’s how the menu will look on mobile:
Here’s the tablet version:
And, this is how it will look on desktop:
You can also test, fork, and play around with the interactive demo on CodePen:
New to Flexbox?
If you aren’t used to flexbox, or need a refresher, these beginner guides will give you all the skills you need to complete this tutorial:
The HTML is a simple <ul> list, as you can see below. The .menu class will be the flex container and the list items will be the flex items. Their order will adapt to the viewport size of the user’s device. For example, the Log In and Sign Up buttons will come first on mobile, but will be displayed at the end of the menu on desktop. We will achieve this effect by making use of flexbox’s ordering properties.
You have probably noticed that menu items with a submenu (“Services” and “Plans”) have an <a> tag without an href attribute. We do this because these “empty” parent menu items don’t lead to any other page–they just open and close the submenu. Using the anchor tag without href is permitted and prevents the page from jumping up on small screens when the user clicks the empty menu item to open or close the submenu.
We also add the tabindex="0" attribute to <a> elements without a href attribute. This is because empty <a> tags are omitted from the default tab order, so we need to put them back to the tabbing order with the tabindex attribute to keep the menu keyboard-accessible.
Note: the toggle button at the end of the list uses a Font Awesome icon. To make the demo work, you’ll need to add the Font Awesome library to the <head> section of the HTML document from CDN using the code below. (If you want to make the menu work offline, you’ll need to host Font Awesome locally.)
As our navigation will be mobile-first, we start with the mobile layout. Most responsive flexbox menus use column-based layouts for mobile, as menu items can be quickly packed below each other by adding the flex-direction: column; rule to the flex container. Even though this is an excellent solution, we won’t use it in our example.
Instead, we will create a wrapping, row-based layout for mobile so that we can display the logo and toggle button next to each other on top of the menu.
The CSS trick here is that we make regular menu items such as Home and About span across the entire container using the width: 100%; rule. So, flexbox will display them below each other, while the logo and toggle will retain their natural sizes and sit on top of the navbar in the same row.
In the CSS below, we also use the justify-content and align-items properties to align the flex items horizontally and vertically. Besides this, we hide the .item elements using the display: none; rule. Menu items will be only revealed when the user clicks the toggle button. The .active class is not in the HTML code, we will dynamically add it with JavaScript.
/* Mobile menu */
.menu {
display: flex;
flex-wrap: wrap;
justify-content: space-between;
align-items: center;
}
.menu li a {
display: block;
padding: 15px 5px;
}
.menu li.subitem a {
padding: 15px;
}
.toggle {
order: 1;
font-size: 20px;
}
.item.button {
order: 2;
}
.item {
order: 3;
width: 100%;
text-align: center;
display: none;
}
.active .item {
display: block;
}
.button.secondary { /* divider between buttons and menu links */
border-bottom: 1px #444 solid;
}
As you can see above, we have also changed the order of menu items with the help of the order property. Our HTML outline follows a logical order. This is how we want screen reader users and search engine bots to go through the menu.
However, in the mobile layout, we want to show the logo and toggle button on top of the menu. We also want to display the two call-to-action buttons (“Log In” and “Sign Up”) before regular menu items. So, we set up the following order:
.logo gets the order: 0; value, as it will be the first item (however, as this is the default value of order, we don’t need to add it to the CSS),
.toggle gets 1, as it comes right after .logo,
.item.button belonging to the Log In and Sign Up buttons gets 2,
and .item belonging to the rest of menu items gets 3.
4. Style the Submenu
As this is mobile-first navigation, we’ll primarily style the submenu with mobile screens in mind. This is a great technique, as it’s usually harder to create a user-friendly submenu for small screens than for larger ones. Then, we can use the same submenu layout for tablet screens as well. For desktop, we’ll only need to change the positioning of the submenu.
By default, the submenu is set to display: none; and will be only revealed when the user clicks the parent menu item. We will add the required JavaScript functionality in the next two steps before moving on to the tablet menu.
As you can see above, now we add the Font Awesome icons using CSS instead of HTML. These icons we add using the ::after pseudo element will be the little down arrows shown next to each menu item that has a submenu.
If you remember we added the Font Awesome icon for the toggle button with HTML in Step 1. This is because the toggle button will be targeted with JavaScript, so it has to be present in the DOM. However, the down arrows here are just style elements that indicate the presence of the submenu. Since no functionality relies on them, it’s better to add them with CSS.
5. Add the Toggle Functionality with JavaScript
We’ll set up the toggle functionality by adding a click event listener to the toggle button that opens and closes the menu on mobile. In the JavaScript code, we will use the ES6 syntax that gives us access to the const and let notation and the for...of loop and already has good browser support.
For the custom JavaScript, create an empty script.js file and add it to the HTML before the closing </body> tag:
<script src="script.js"></script>
And here’s the JavaSript code responsible for the toggle functionality:
const toggle = document.querySelector(".toggle");
const menu = document.querySelector(".menu");
/* Toggle mobile menu */
function toggleMenu() {
if (menu.classList.contains("active")) {
menu.classList.remove("active");
// adds the menu (hamburger) icon
toggle.querySelector("a").innerHTML = "<i class=’fas fa-bars’></i>";
} else {
menu.classList.add("active");
// adds the close (x) icon
toggle.querySelector("a").innerHTML = "<i class=’fas fa-times’></i>";
}
}
/* Event Listener */
toggle.addEventListener("click", toggleMenu, false);
First, we select the menu and the toggle button using the querySelector() method so that we can access them with JavaScript.
Then, we add the custom toggleMenu() function that will be called when the toggle is clicked.
Lastly, we add the event listener that will be listening to the click event using the addEventListener() method.
6. Add the Dropdown Functionality with JavaScript
Now, when the user clicks the toggle button, the menu is activated and deactivated, however, the submenu is still hidden. We will add this functionality with the following JavaScript:
const items = document.querySelectorAll(".item");
/* Activate Submenu */
function toggleItem() {
if (this.classList.contains("submenu-active")) {
this.classList.remove("submenu-active");
} else if (menu.querySelector(".submenu-active")) {
menu.querySelector(".submenu-active").classList.remove("submenu-active");
this.classList.add("submenu-active");
} else {
this.classList.add("submenu-active");
}
}
/* Event Listeners */
for (let item of items) {
if (item.querySelector(".submenu")) {
item.addEventListener("click", toggleItem, false);
item.addEventListener("keypress", toggleItem, false);
}
}
Here, we add the .submenu-active class to each menu item with a submenu when the user clicks it.
First, we select all menu items with the querySelectorAll() method that returns a node list (rather than a single element like querySelector()).
In the custom toggleItem() function, we add and remove .submenu-active to/from the clicked element. Note that in the else if block, we remove the class from every other menu items that were previously opened. This way, it won’t happen that two submenus are open at the same time, as they can cover each other on desktop.
Finally, we loop through the items classList using a for...of loop. Within the if block, we add two event listeners to menu items that have a submenu: one for the click event for regular users who access the menu by clicking or tapping, and one for the keypress event for keyboard users.
7. Create the Tablet Menu
We’ll create the tablet layout using a min-width media query. On tablet, four menu items will be visible by default: the logo, the two call-to-action buttons (“Log In” and “Sign Up”), and the toggle. To make everything pretty, our CSS will:
change the order of the menu items to adapt the layout to tablet viewports,
realign the items (see the explanation below),
make the Log In and Sign Up buttons look like real buttons (in the mobile layout, they look like links, as they are part of the toggleable dropdown list).
In the tablet layout, menu items are aligned in a different way. If you take a look at the four visible menu items, you will see that the two buttons are displayed in the center, while the logo and toggle are pushed to the left and right end of the container:
We can achieve this effect using the flex: 1; CSS rule. The flex property is a shorthand for flex-grow, flex-shrink, and flex-basis. It can exist with many different value combinations. When it’s declared with only one value, it belongs to flex-grow, with flex-shrink and flex-basis keeping their default values.
In the CSS above, we have added the flex: 1; rule to the .logo and .toggle elements. In this way, we can tell the browser that if there’s any positive space on the screen, we want to share it between these two elements. As the Log In and Sign Up buttons retain their default 0 value for flex-grow, they won’t get anything from the extra space. So, they will stay in the center of the container, as they adhere to the justify-content: center; rule set on the flex container.
8. Create the Desktop Menu
The desktop menu hides the toggle, sets back the original order and natural width of each item, and repositions the submenu.
It’s important to keep in mind that the tablet-specific rules also apply to the desktop menu. This is because here, the viewport width is larger than both 700px and 960px, so both media queries take effect. So, .logo retains its flex: 1; property and pushes the rest of the items to the end of the container.
9. Let Users Close the Submenu By Clicking Anywhere on the Page
Now there’s only one step back. As the dropdown menu is activated on the click event, it doesn’t close automatically when the user hovers away from the top menu item. This is especially annoying on desktop where the dropdown can cover the content.
So, it would be nice to enable users to close the submenu by clicking anywhere on the screen. We can add the feature with JavaScript:
/* Close Submenu From Anywhere */
function closeSubmenu(e) {
let isClickInside = menu.contains(e.target);
if (!isClickInside && menu.querySelector(".submenu-active")) {
menu.querySelector(".submenu-active").classList.remove("submenu-active");
}
}
/* Event listener */
document.addEventListener("click", closeSubmenu, false);
The custom closeSubmenu() function checks if the user clicked inside the menu with the help of the target property. If not and there’s an active submenu on the screen, the .submenu-active class will be removed, so the submenu closes itself. We add the event listener to the document object, as we want to listen for clicks on the whole page.
You’ve Built a Responsive Navigation Bar With Flexbox and JavaScript!
Our mobile-first, responsive navigation bar is up and running in three different layouts.
Here’s a reminder of the end result:
Flexbox is a great tool to implement complex layouts without any tweaks. If you combine flexbox’s alignment, ordering, and sizing properties with media queries, you can create different layouts for different viewports without having to manipulate the HTML source code.

SVG color fonts are poised to take over the graphic design world in 2020, but what exactly are they, and how can you use them?
Here we’ll sift through the tech jargon and get to the simple truth of color fonts. This unashamedly in-your-face trend promises to put the fun back into typography. A must-know for web and graphic designers alike, this nifty new technology will have a transformative effect on digital and print design for years to come. So don’t get left behind, and read on!
If you want to use highly detailed type on a design, you have to use a vector or raster image of a letter or group of letters. Whether created from scratch by typography artists or downloaded from a stock site, these images are time-consuming to make and don’t have the functionality or flexibility of a font file.
At least that was the case until now. Color fonts, sometimes referred to as chromatic fonts, represent the next evolutionary step for typography, incorporating details like color, gradients, and textures into a font file, in either vector or bitmap format. Vector details look clear and sharp however large they are scaled, while bitmap color fonts can look pixelated or blurry when scaled to a size greater than their intended maximum size.
Each color font is made up of a ‘fallback’ core, which is the standard OpenType vector font, plus additional data tagged on which is rendered in SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) format. Amongst font developers, color fonts are referred to as OpenType-SVG fonts.
This Adobe color font, Trajan Color Concept, combines the standard Trajan font with gradients, colors and shadowing for an ornate metallic effect.
If you’re looking at the font on a browser which supports color fonts, you’ll be able to see the colorful version. If not, you’ll see the fallback version. This is important to make a mental note of, before you dive into converting all the fonts on your website to color fonts. As color fonts are relatively new, most browser versions are currently unable to support the technology. Skip to ‘How Can I Use Them’, below, to find out more.
Hmm, So Why Would I Want to Use Them?
Remember the thrill of using WordArt to embellish your PowerPoint presentations back at school? While your teacher may have been less thrilled, there’s just something downright fun about adding a maximalist flourish to text. Color fonts are basically like WordArt for the internet age, adding extra oomph to any design.
This isn’t a trend that minimalist fans will wholeheartedly embrace, but it’s certainly refreshing after decades of clean, Swiss School-inspired design. Color fonts sit at the opposite end of the spectrum to Scandi cleanliness, instead taking their cues from emojis, retro type styles, and app design.
Color fonts tread a shaky line between good and bad taste, but somehow they feel exactly spot on for right now. They're making their appearance alongside a revival for all things retro in design, as well as a new maximalist mood across all design fields, from fashion to interiors. Color fonts don’t take themselves too seriously and are instantly engaging, and that’s what makes them particularly attractive to designers and marketers looking to entice the fickle, tech-obsessed millennial market.
Above all, color fonts are fun! While early color fonts have been designed with websites and apps primarily in mind, they also have the potential to offer something youthful and fresh to print design too. You can’t use a color font without cracking a smile, which is perhaps what designers and consumers are craving in these politically and socially uncertain times.
OK, So Where Can I Use Them?
Because color fonts are such a new technology, many browsers, devices, and software programs are yet to catch up. You might not be able to view color fonts on some browsers—you'll only be able to view the standard OpenType version instead.
However, this is likely to change very soon. OpenType-SVG fonts have been declared an industry standard for color fonts, which means that browsers and software will probably update rapidly to facilitate them. You can currently view color fonts on more recent versions of Firefox (from version 26) and Microsoft Edge (from version 38 on Windows 10).
As for using color fonts on design software, Adobe is ahead of the curve, with designers able to view and apply color fonts using the newest incarnations of Illustrator (CC 2018), Photoshop (CC 2017), and InDesign (CC 2018).
Some type designers are also experimenting with animated versions of color fonts. Gilbert, a rainbow color font created by Fontself, is usable in Adobe After Effects.
Gilbert, a rainbow color font available in static and animated versions
These animated styles represent an exciting new development for more accessible animation—expect to see them everywhere across social media, GIFs and videos very soon.
Where Can I Find Color Fonts?
Color fonts are few and far between at the moment, but more are being released all the time as the trend gains traction. Adobe has a dedicated color font Typekit, where it details the newest color fonts available for download for web and print. One of its most notable launches is the color font version of Emoji One, which makes integrating colorful emoji graphics into your designs super easy with the Glyphs panel to hand.
Some font designers use a dedicated platform to launch their color font creations. Bixa Color is a retro-inspired collaborative effort by NovoTypo and Roel Nieskens.
Want to have a go at creating your own color font? Fontself is the color font designer’s go-to tool. Take a look at the dedicated page for Gilbert, which was created using Fontself, to source some inspiration on the possibilities.
You can also find premium color fonts on Envato Elements, our subscription-based digital asset library. Unlike free color fonts you can find online, our fonts always offer a high level of quality.
I’m a Color Font Convert! But How Should I Use Them?
If you’ve been bitten by the color font bug, it can be tempting to throw out all your old fonts and go a bit crazy. Before you create designs which resemble a bad acid trip, take into consideration these tips and pointers for making the most of this new typography trend.
As with standard fonts, some are notably better than others. Just because you can use a color font doesn’t mean you necessarily should. Be mindful of the limitations of color fonts. If you have your heart set on a bitmap font, it’s advisable not to use this at a larger scale than was intended by the font designer. So, for example, a bitmap color font might look great on a printed flyer set to the right size, but it might look much less polished on a responsive web design that involves scaling content to a large size on desktops.
It’s also worth keeping in mind that color fonts are heavier than their OpenType relatives, due to the extra amount of data they carry. They aren’t always huge (for example, the Bixa Color font carries an extra 30kB on top of the regular font file size), but it can affect the loading time of websites and apps. By all means use your color fonts with abandon, but don’t allow liberal use to affect the user’s experience of your design.
If you want to use color fonts for web design, you should also take into account the possibility that it may be a long time before most visitors will be able to view the fonts as you intended. It may be many months or years before individuals choose to update or switch browsers, and most will not be aware of the pressing need to do this in relation to color font viewing. With this in mind, you need to make sure that your font looks as good in its ‘fallback’ format as it does in color.
Because color fonts are overtly loud and garish, they can push a design into distasteful territory. For some designs, particularly apps aimed at a younger market, this can be a bonus! Adobe’s color font Typekit page instantly provokes that love-it-or-hate-it reaction to excessive web design. Other designers might prefer to balance a color font with more pared-back type or black-and-white images on the rest of the layout, or use a color font as the sole focus of an otherwise clean and simple design.
Pairing color fonts with cleaner elements on your designs will help layouts feel more balanced, as demonstrated in this example using the Popsky color font, designed by Igor Petrovic.
If you’re still unsure about how to use color fonts in your designs, it’s a good tip to remind yourself of the purpose of your design. Are you looking to target a market which is hyper trend-aware, like tech-savvy millennials? Then using color fonts freely will result in an engaging and youthful design. Do you simply want to use color fonts to add a point of difference to your design? Using them sparingly will give you a more professional and polished result.

However, this is an exciting time for budding font designers. If you’re looking for a new type challenge, creating your own color font from scratch could be both creatively and financially rewarding.
